Art Fair Fridays – Selena Wong

It’s Friday once again, which means both Heirloom & Knot and I are very happy to share with you the latest instalment in our ongoing Art Fair Fridays series, where we bring you weekly design inspiration and exclusive interviews with the talented artists that inspire our creativity on a daily basis.
Today, we’re so excited to share with you the beautiful work of Selena Wong, whose romantic illustrations exude feminine whimsicality and playful abandon.  Each pieces has an adventurous spirit, and demonstrates a ‘translation of daydreams and nightmares’ into images that are both playful and thought provoking. Her style is intricate…layered with narrative vignettes, which weave the fantastical with reality in a way that feels reflective and imaginative.

How long would you say you have been a professional artist and what has lead you to this point in your career?
Art has been my life for as long as I could remember. This is the field I specialized in throughout high school and university. In 2009, I exhibited as an Untapped Emerging Artist at The Artist Project, and I believe that point marked my path to becoming a professional.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about your art?
During one of the more uncertain times in my career, I was lucky to have a conversation with someone I look up to. The outcome from that conversation was something I remind myself with time after time – “The path to an artist’s career is not always clear. You’re destined to do this. It’s something that gives you joy, you should be doing it.”

How would you describe your creative process?
I carry with me many little notebooks where I scribble down sparkles of ideas wherever I am. When one of those scribbles remains in the forefront of my thoughts, I’ll choose it.  It’ll become more elaborately drawn out and eventually be composed and carried out as a final piece of work.

What is your favourite medium to work in?
Gouache is my favourite medium. It has a finish that gives a beautiful matte surface and it’s perfect for creating pastel palettes.

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?
I recently exhibited a small body of work as a solo artist at Gallery House, alongside Ray Caesar. Ray has always been one of my biggest inspirations and it was a dream come true to fill a gallery space among his masterpieces.

How would you describe your signature style?
My work speaks softly and you have to get real close to it. It is sweet, dainty, but also a touch provocative.

Where do you find your greatest creative inspiration?
In my dreams, in my moments of solace, and in a bathtub. These are the places where my creativity comes to visit me the most. I also share my studio space with my pet rabbit; he reminds me to love and to be gentle and kind. He often makes an appearance in my work as he sends me back to an age of innocence, and imbues my creations with fondness and mischief.

What do you think sets your work apart from other artists?
When an artist creates work based on their life experiences, they create their own unique trend and style. If they try to adhere to what’s current, they’re only following a direction others have achieved for them. It’s my belief that composing pieces from passion and from the impression of my surroundings leads to creating a sincere way of telling a unique story. I believe that it’s my personal stories and how I tell my stories sets me apart from other artists.

Dainty and pretty, with a dash of edge is as we know, my favourite. I love how Selena’s work feels feminine and delicate but also somewhat dis-alarming at times.
