Art Fair Friday – Dan Lam

Art Fair Friday – Dan Lam

At last it is Friday and both Bijou & Boheme and Heirloom & Knot are thrilled to share with you our latest installment in our ongoing Art Fair Fridays series where we bring you weekly design inspiration and exclusive interviews with the talented artists that inspire our creativity on a daily basis.
This week we had the opportunity to talk to sculptor/artist, Dan Lam. Dan Lam uses unusual materials in a huge variety of bright, candy colours to create one-of-a-kind sculptures in multiple textures. For those who love fun, psychedelic palettes, Dan Lam is the artist for you! Read all about her and her inspirations below.

How long would you say you have been a professional artist and what has lead you to this point in your career?

While I’ve sold work throughout my years in school, I would say my professional career started after I graduated with my Masters. Making art and teaching was all I focused on (versus going to class, other deadlines, etc) and really started to get my work out there on my own (versus school related motivation).

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about your art ?

The best advice I’ve received about being an artist and the creative practice is to “just keep making”. As far as my own art goes: “Give the work places for your eye to rest.”

How would you describe your creative process?

It is physically involved, very hands on, and often happening all the time. Sometimes just sitting and thinking about a piece for hours in the studio is still creating.

What is your favourite medium to work in?

I love non-traditional media, I am especially attracted to resin for its versatility. And of course, I couldn’t live without my acrylics!

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

I think it’s just sheerl amount of exposure that has really exploded this year. Many different art publications that I grew up reading picked up on my work – that was really exciting.

How would you describe your signature style?

Tactile, colorful, yummy.

Where do you find your greatest creative inspiration?

One is in nature. The other is in creating. I think making is its own inspiration machine. I can go into the studio, work with a material, create something, with no aim, with aim, whatever my state of mind and make all kinds of discoveries.

What do you think sets your work apart from other artists?

I think I’ve combined a series of elements together that haven’t been as commonly combined previously. I think most people can identify my work based on texture and color.
