04 Jan Resolution Job #3…Chairs

Still working on the proverbial ‘must get my ass in gear and get it done’ list.
As of today, I’ve managed to check off number one- dechristmify..and that was a huge one which involved way too much glitter removal for any sane person to handle.
I also finished off number two - paint frame for TV white.
As for the next one, I’m sending a big prayer to whatever god is listening to help me finish off the chairs in the hallway.
They’ve have become akin to writer’s block for me…I just don’t know what to do with them…well edit, I think I do now I think but it’s taken forever and a lot of days.
The saga started with these (there are two)…purchased for $200 on Craigslist.
At first I wanted to leave the wood and thought (foolishly) that I could reupholster them myself…total fail.
As you can see by the evidence, upholstery a la me, not an option.
Moving forward, I think gold- love gold, want more gold, have to have gold…
Not so much- it’s too shiny and baroque and with the wallpaper/lamps…

it’s entirely too much gold.
Plus, if I add the fabric I was planning on…
the whole space has turned black, white and gold…and I hate that thought.
So…back to the drawing board.
I know, how about charcoal grey?
I have a can of Cracked Pepper left over from when we painted our front door.
Perfect. I’ll do one of those painting techniques and wipe it over the gold to make the gold all aged and purty.
Fail.
It just looks dingy.
Moving on…forget faux/crap finish, just paint them grey.
Surely that will look great with wallpaper and lamps.
So I paint both by hand, which is tedious and awful.
And…I don’t like it.
{Sorry, forgot to document these steps/mistakes}
I’m sad and dismayed.
{only not nearly this glamorous}
The grey is actually a blue grey and as such, totally throws out my new idea of putting this fabric on the chairs.
BLAST!!!!
Ok- regroup, go to Home Depot- I have no idea what to do…no idea about paint, fabric…none of it.
Then I think, when in doubt, go black- black is classic, black is thinning (I figure even pretty antique French chairs probably want to look thin,) black is chic…
I decide to go with the flat because in my mind, that will work better with the lamp shades.
I rush home, set up and then spray like a crazy person slightly possessed in the garage- inhale way way too many fumes- freeze my bum off and end up spraying my white coat along with the chairs but….all is not lost.
{Oh and yes, some of the paint immediately starts to crackle because of the paint cocktail underneath but whatever, adds to the historic charm.}
Anyhow….I actually like- alot!
{ignore spray painted fabric please…it’s not staying}
Halleluah!!!
And the best part, with the new black frames my originally (hence already paid for) Marimekko fabric looks fabulous.
Yes, I’m going to embrace the black and white and run with it.
If Audrey can pull it off, so can my foyer.
And with that, my brain sings a happy dance and reels with thought of one final addition…
.
..a little leopard purr to the cushions.
Jumping for joy at this point.
And now, it’s time to take a freaking massive sigh of relief- this project has actually made me question my love for chairs but I think, I hope, the final result will make me fall in mad love with the idea all over again.

For isn’t it the process, the sweat, the mistakes, that makes these types of resolutions so much more worth their while?
I’d say yes. If not a slightly begrudging yes.
De tout, de rien
Posted at 08:15h, 04 JanuaryHi Christine,
New follower here! I love the chairs and I love the final paint result! I am kind of a chair aficionado myself, I have 3 or 4 in my basement waiting for their makeover. Mine are just chairs I rescued from the curbside.
Love the pics you’ve chosen to punctuate your comments!

Posted at 08:28h, 04 JanuarySo good that you finally found a paint colour that you love on your chairs 🙂 I’m sure they’ll look fantastic when they’re done, especially with that leopard cushions 🙂
I have 4 chairs I bought off Kijiji almost 2 years ago that are still waiting for their makeover. Can you say procrastinate? 😉 They’re on my list of projects to get done SOON!
Happy 2011!

Posted at 08:44h, 04 JanuaryToo funny Christine but the end result will be great. I also have chairs that need painting and have painted them twice but am going back to my original thought which was black - can’t go wrong.
Can’t wait to see them when they are finished!

Posted at 10:09h, 04 JanuaryChristine - MUST see the final pics!!! Loved the story of your “chair drama,” - sometimes we just have to feel our way through it, right?
So glad I got a peek of your lamps, too - they’re very similar to mine, and your drum shades give me a good idea that’s what I need to go with!

Posted at 10:13h, 04 JanuaryThe end result is great! Sorry it was such a pain. I have a chair sitting in my garage and still can’t figure out which direction I want to go with it. Hopefully, I’ll figure it out soon!

Posted at 12:37h, 04 JanuaryI was just thinking to myself, Hmmm, Bijou and Boheme hasn’t been updated in a while because I haven’t got a notification from Bloglovin, so I visited the old fashioned way and low and behold, you have been updating!!! My silly Bloglovin isn’t working apparently!
Anyways, I will keep better tabs on your posts, now that I know. Thanks for all your comments while I was away. They made me smile.
And I am loving the new look of the chairs!

Posted at 13:40h, 04 JanuaryI love that I am not the only one that does not get it right the first, or second, or maybe third time. All that matters is that the chairs look fabulous!!

Posted at 14:26h, 04 JanuaryHA! love it. But this is how we learn right? I certainly hope you have the special holder that makes spray painting easier.
The Marimekko will look so good. And yes, the arduous project will soon be long forgotten, but the beautiful chairs will not.

Posted at 15:06h, 04 JanuaryChristine…I have been to that rodeo before and it is no fun!!!! People think design is easy because all of us creative people make it seem that way…but they don’t see the trials and tribulations of trying to get it just right!!!! Glad you hung in there.

I have 2 wing back chairs in my living room that have needed to be redone for like 2 years. I’m feeling inspired now. That is def going on my “list.” I’m finally starting to feel a little better but it is slow going but at least we are going 🙂

Posted at 16:15h, 05 JanuaryI love you guys- reading your comments always makes a huge grin appear instantly on my face- thank you!!!
I dropped the chairs off yesterday and he said they’d take a few days so hopefully, I’ll be able to post the final afters by Monday. As for the tv frame, I’m afraid the final reveal on that one is a little ways away. I’m having my master bedroom panelled and painted so I’m not putting the frame up until that’s done- fingers crossed my fabulous ‘do it all’ guy will become available soon- will definitely keep you posted and thanks so much again for taking the time to say hello! xoxo

Posted at 17:08h, 05 JanuaryHa! This is great Christine!
Decorating is such a dilemma — right?
I actually dig the matte black spray — reminds me of the cool Mooi chairs that look burnt.
It’s going to be grand with that fabric.
Can’t wait to see the reveal.

Can’t wait to see them finished. I am going to attempt an upholstery job myself but think I might be sending my chair off to someone who knows what they are doing!
