Project Brownstone: Full Reveal!

I’m so happy to be able to share with you today, one of my most favourite reveals of all time…#projectbrownstone.

This one started a few years back, when my client first approached me about helping with her brand new old brownstone. At the start of the project, her and her husband had just bought and begun renovation on a stunning row house and were looking for someone to consult with on design/architectural questions and then later on, to help with decorating/furnishing/space planning etc.

Just to give you an idea of where this home started, this is a shot of the before…

project brownstone christine dovey

…clearly a space with amazing bones but in need of a little love.

With a canvas like that, I really couldn’t wait to get started and together with an amazing client, we began the process of bringing this beauty back to life.

Along the way Natalie Kraiem, a NYC designer, was also brought on board to assist with local sourcing and oversight.  It was great collaborating with another designer and in the end, I think the space evolved into something that really represents the client and both of our viewpoints.

And when all was complete, I was so lucky to be able to fly down to NY and put finishing touches on the space and get it totally camera ready for its close up in Style at Home Magazine. Shot by my friend and amazing talent, Nicole Cohen, the feature tells the whole story of this beautiful home and how it all came together…

I’m so honoured that Style at Home wanted to publish this beautiful home and am truly so proud of how everyone involved with the project, worked together to create something special…

Brownstones are officially my favourite.

There’s Quite a Few Reasons Why I’ve Been a Shit Blogger the Past Few Weeks – A Secret Shoot, IDS Toronto, Canadian Tire and Steven and Chris

The past few weeks have been biz-to-the-izzy.

For one, I’ve been working a lot on some new local projects, which involve tons of shopping/meeting etc…there’s also been a pretty exciting top secret shoot.

Also, I’ve been lucky enough to attend some fabulous preview events.

For example, I spent one morning last week previewing Canadian Tire’s new goodies for spring…

So many good things. My kids need those doodle bikes and play structure…hubs needs one of the schmance BBQ’s…I wouldn’t mind some of the tent with real bed business..and the pretty outdoor equipments/lawnmowers/hoses might make doing all that stuff also more of a possibility around here;)

And speaking of good stuff…I reconnected with some of my favourite design/blogging friends at the gala for the Interior Design Show here in Toronto. I was admittedly pretty focussed on catching up with everyone…

…so didn’t see as much of the show as I would have liked but I did get a chance to pant over some pretty incredible IKEA kitchens…more on those in separate posts.

As for work itself, I’ve been sourcing my brains out lately…Elte and I have become very, very good friends…I think I’ve been there 6 times in the past two weeks alone…

The trips are always worth it of course…if you follow on Instagram, you’ve seen that all this sourcing is making these sorts of things happen at #projectgreenbay and #projectbraecrest…

Ps…the incredible mirror and blue velvet chair are from one of my new favourite shops…Love The Design – so good.

As for secret shoot…well it’s a secret so sorry about not being able to give you much on that front…here’s a few wee peeks…

Jasper joined in on this fun too…

And speaking of kids…in between of all of this work fun, I had ‘littles’ stuff of course too…Scarlett did some modelling business, including a fashion show on Canada AM

…and I spent a day with Malcolm in his classroom doing science stuff..

…while this one of course…

…required some pretty constant attention as well:)))

What else…oh yes…I’ve been working on a little kitchen re-fresh at my parent’s house…we travelled to London (Ontario that is:) last weekend and installed the custom drapery made by Hollie Cooper…

We painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter and had subway tile added as a backsplash…

…a few small changes made a huge difference so pleased as punch there.

And finally, though I taped this before Christmas, my latest episode of Steven and Chris aired this past Monday…

…you can watch that HERE.

So yup…it’s been a whirlwind few weeks…thankfully, my little dude is starting 1/2 day school on Monday and I’m working my way through some pretty amazing resumes re: the assistant position I’m hoping to hire for.  Those two things in combo are hopefully going to mean way more time to blog etc.

Crossing fingers.

As always, thanks for checking in and sticking by this feed, even when I don’t post nearly as much as I should.

Happy New Year my friends.

Pretty sure I thought we’d have flying cars and food that appeared behind magic robotic shoots by now but anyhow;)

I love the start of a new year…rapped with possibilities and new beginnings but still tinged with a hopefully rather pleasing sentimentality about the year that’s just passed.

For me, 2104 was for the most part, mucho beuno.

For one, at least half of it was played out with Songza’s ‘Commercial Indie Pop’ via my gifted Jambox on repeat.  Having music in the background as the soundtrack of your life makes everything seem better so just that alone was a good, good thing about this past July- December anyways.  Right now, as luck would have it, I’m typing to ‘I’m Gonna Take You To My Show’ so that’s sort of fitting;)

As for what actually happened, I think this past year was a turning point for my business.  Here’s a quick look back, thanks to my life record, otherwise known as Instagram (it’s much better at following along lately because I admittedly, wasn’t the most diligent blogger in 2014- on of my pseudo resolutions is to be better at that…I miss the writing and the diarizing etc.)

So…the year that was…here were some of my highlights…starting today with January- June…I’d be here all day if I tried to do the full 2014 at once.

1. One of my client’s home in Chicago was featured in Style Me Pretty

And that my friends was pretty much January- June.  There was a lot of other day to day design work thrown in there but these were the highlights I’d say.  The second half of the year turned out to be sort of crazy pants insane in terms of wurk so I’ll go through that tomorrow.

For now, I want to take a minute to thank you all for continuing to pop by here and read up on the comings and goings at CDS…again, I know I’ve been a bit of a backseat driver blogger for the last little bit but I promise, promise to be better. It’s a priority for 2015 because honestly, I miss it…I miss you.

So yup…cheers to what’s coming. It’s going to be the gong show called life that it always is but I’m pumped for the unknown…the uncertainty…the curvy/crazy paths…all of it:))))

Birthday, Party Planning, Work

I’ve been not an aces blogger as of late.  Apologies.

This past week, I’ve been pre-occupied with the impending doom that was my birthday this past Monday…I’ve been dreading it for years in fact…something about the sound of 40 that just really rubbed me the wrong way.

In the lead up to the big day, I turned a little crazy trying to figure out how the heck I wanted to ring in this new decade and I’m pretty sure I caused hubs more than a little stress…it felt sort of like New Years when I was 25…wanted something special but not sure what that was and deathly afraid of having it pass without any real fanfair or acknowledgment of the massive event in my head it was/is.  To me, 40 represents this sort of shift…almost like you’re officially not a ‘young person’ anymore…I loved turning 30 because to me, that was the decade that was going to give me all those things I dreamed of as a little girl…a husband, children, a career etc. etc. And you know what, that’s exactly what happened and to feel that newness and unraveling of life all unraveled, just felt/feels sort of big.

So long story short, I tied up a lot of meaning into this birthday in my head and wanted to ring it in right.

After MUCH discussion, hubs and I settled on a party for my nearest and dearest in the fall since so many are away in the summer. He preemptively booked a rib truck for the food so the catering is done.  And because he knows I’m a total control freak, he’s letting me at least have a say in what the party actually ends up looking like. I’ve of course put together a little moodboard that brings together some of the key elements…

party board

I haven’t hosted a real party party in a while so tres excited to throw something delightful together.

And as  for the actual real birthday day, husband organized a night away for just the two of us in the city, after a little family party the day before.  And being the good egg that he is, he arranged many little surprises at the hotel with signs of the big day plastered everywhere…a little embarrassing yes but sweeter than sweet.  I had spa goodness for most of the day and then a brilliant night out, sans kids…which PS, is the second time in 6 years hubs and I have been away so yeah…it was enjoyed.

me and ian

So…I have to say that as of 3 days in, 40 isn’t all that bad.

I’m so lucky to have the most amazing family and what’s more, incredible friends.  I got so many amazingly sweet emails, FB messages and even blog posts on my birthday.  A special thanks to Erika for this entry about our work together and my sweet friend Lindsey for this amazingly kind post.

Again, I’m feeling very very blessed.

Of course, as all this birthday hoopla was going on (which is now officially being spread out from April with my trip to Miami all the way to September with the party…that’s a good long 5 month b-day celebration;) work was still getting did.

I’ve just begun three new projects, that I’ll outline tomorrow but for now, here’s a few peaks at some new stuff that’s been happening with existing ones.

#projectgraphicmodern just sent me photos of our her newly upholstered settee and wowzers it’s good…

settee refinished

My fabulous client sourced that fabric and I gotta say, we’re in true love territory here…how could I not be when it’s a graphic made up of black, white, blush and gold!

Finishing touches are happening in that room and I’m hoping for a full reveal in the next few weeks.

As for #projectgreenbay, we’re in the middle of a curtain making frenzy.  My amazingly talented friend Hollie just sent me this preview pick of the custom romans we had made for the son’s room…

christine dovey style project greenbay roman blinds

Stay tuned to see the drapery fabric nirvana that unfolds in the library, master, girl’s bedrooms, master and office…all should be done and installed within the month.

In #projectbistrochic news, we are so so close to being done.  Our Hermes scarf got all framed up and I can’t wait to see it installed…I’m sort of dying over how well it plays with the Quadrille pillows we had made…

project bistro chic framed scarf and pillows

…again, I’ve got Hollie to thank for making them and 219 for ordering up the fabric for us.

And speaking of fabric, just wait until you read tomorrow’s post and see all the Kelly Wearstler textile magic that’s going to be loaded into one of the new projects I  mentioned…be still my heart is what I’ll say on that note for now.

And finally for today, a little peak at what’s going on with #projectfeminineinjection…and I have to preface this with I did NONE of this…my client is 100% responsible for this entire room…I’ve given an enthusiastic thumbs up on a few things but other than that, this is all her…

project feminine injection living room and dining

As you know, I’ve been working on the family room in this stunning house and am SO excited that my client (who is PS, CLEARLY a major talent in her own right,) has asked me to also consult on her master bedroom, nursery and upstairs hallway…wohoo!!!!

And in the meantime, I’ve been asked to source a piece of art for that void to the left of the fireplace…so far, my top contenders are these moody ladies…

billy and hells nadja

oliver rossi joelle 2

zena holloway angels

The last one is a brand new artist to Citizen Atelier, Zena Holloway…this collection entitled ‘angels’ is just so incredibly beautiful.

Let’s throw this one out to you…which of the three do you like best in that stunning room?

Advice is as always, much appreciated.

And for now, I think that wraps it up.

Again, a giant huge warm hugs thanks to everyone for all your sweet b-day messages…they truly meant the world to me. I know I say it often but I’m constantly so amazed and humbled by the amazingly close connections I’ve made with people via this little blog…it’s truly so uplifting and heartwarming…cheezy perhaps but infinitely true.

A New Project #projectfeminineinjection

I have  brand spanking new project to share that I’m more than just a little excited about.

I actually shared the first sneak peeks of it over while guest posting for the fabulous Sam at The Peak of Tres Chic yesterday…so if you want to see the whole lot of so called ‘before shots’ like this one…

…head over there:)

As you can see from even these two shots though, this space is already stunning.

But…my client contacted me because she isn’t totally in love with how the whole thing is reading…basically, she feels like it lacks a feminine element and very much wants to add some of girly goodness into the mix… so we’re working on a way on a plan that looks something like this…

…that focuses on using some Porter Teleo magic wallpaper on the back wall behind the sofa.

The wheels are already in motion with the windows painted out in black, chandelier ordered and fabric for window panels selected…I can’t wait to see this all happen.

And in the meantime, this fabulous client who clearly has an amazing eye of her own, sent me these photos of the rest of her main floor for some consideration and I proceeded to die from the gorgeous…

living dining

living dining rounded windows

living dining black marble

living dining5

The dining chairs in the living room are just place holders for a new pair of occassionals and believe me, what’s going there is nothing short of fabulous.  And can we talk about the antique mirror on the fireplace or how said mirror is layered up with that giant gold framed divinity?!?!  Or that farking black marble that IS. MY. LIFE.  If I don’t have nero slathered all over #projectdreamhouse , I’ll be no happy. And those rounded charcoal windows…gah…just makes my heart skip a beat they do.

All of this is sublime…and admittedly, slightly pressure inducing…I can’t F this place up if you know what I mean…it’s soooooooo good already.

PS- I’m the luckiest whatever I am in the world…have the BEST CLIENTS EVER…feeling tres tres blessed.

And speaking of luck, you still have a few days to enter to win a stunning Zoe Pawlak original…

Art Makes the World Go Round #1- Edgy Modernity in Shades of Pink, White, Gold and Black…and #projectfeelinvintage

I love house stuff and art more than clothes…there I said it.

I’m never going to be a fashion blogger.

But I know people out there like clothes most and don’t get me wrong, I enjoy pretty things to wear as much as the next gal…when push comes to shove though, I’ll always choose buying stuff for my house or investing in art, before a new outfit.

So, in an effort to make everyone happy, I’m going to bring back a little ‘art to outfit’ esque series.  Only this time it’s going to be mostly my art finds of the week with a certain feel and some stuff that seems to fit that ‘style’.  Some weeks it will be clothese, some weeks it will be rooms, and some weeks it will be a mix of all of the above.  Make sense?

Caryn Drexyl

Here goes edition one, starting with my art picks for this week…

Matt French

Heather Chontos

{PS- If you want to link to any of these art pieces directly, just click on the picture itself}

…which as you may have noticed, are all about edgy modernity…in shades of pink, black, gold and white.

As you’ve known for a looooong time (and can also guess pretty easily based on the looks of this here site,) my obsession with a palate of blusy pink, black, white and gold is going no where fast.  And though there are other juicy combos I love as well (my new favourite being lilac and poppy, thanks to this brilliance from Bailey,) this PBWG thing is just always going to rein supreme for me.

So with that all in mind, here’s a collection of pretty clothes, art selections and decor pieces that all line up well with the spirit of these PBWG/graphic art fantasticas…

And, since art usually inspires design for me most of all, I took one of these gorgeous images and did a little design board action for it…this one is the plan for #projectfeelinvintage ‘s hallway…

Can’t wait for this one to come to life.
