I Need a Dining Table and Fast

Ok friends…I’m coming here asking for some help because my current workload is making it next to impossible for me to make a decision on anything related to my own house…brain dead as it were.

I have a shoot coming up that requires me to finish off some spaces in my house that are almost there but not quite. In my kitchen area, I have an attached dining room that has now seen three tables come and go. The first was the white tulip table from my old house.

(photo Donna Griffith)

I like the shape but it was making the whole space way too white and black…as well, though the oval works great functionally, it just wasn’t large enough for the space. So…I decided to sell that one off and really wanted something that brought some warmth in…enter wood. I had a harvest long narrow table custom made and was super excited for that situation…but…the finish on it just wasn’t what I had expected and was actually quite grey and in a weird way, didn’t actually look like wood. With this one, the shape and size was perfect, but it just wasn’t aesthetically what I was looking for.

So…I sold that one off and to make due until a decision on something new was made, I brought up the walnut Tulip table from my newly renovated basement…all well and good but now the basement is without a table and as with the white earlier version, it just doesn’t maximize the space. I also find the finish difficult to manage with the kids and their endless spills.

As you can see, the walls are white, the chairs and cabinet are black.

The attached kitchen has more of the same (subway tiles, black cabinets, marble like counter) with a little brass and raw oak thrown in.

So what do I do for a table?!?!?!

My first thought was something old and made of wood.

But then I browsed this huge collection of designer dining tables and saw this beauty…

…which reminded me of my current favourite coffee table from West Elm that I’m more than a little obsessed with…

And I think the glass could actually be super nice in there. The brass detailing would also pick up on my island. Also, glass is easy to wipe up and clean, though when it’s dirty, looks dirty lol.

It’s a definite contender.

Others on my top five consideration list…

1. A stunning reproduction Refractory table

2. The oval version (two legs) of this beautiful Juno table

3. The most ridiculously fantastical antique table I’ve ever seen that I spied at an outdoor market, and then tracked down to a store in Toronto…

…but is easily 3x my budget.

4. Something super simple and raw like this vintage oak number…

5. The Restoration Hardware raw oak loveliness that we used at Project Brownstone

I’d love love your thoughts on this. Pick a favourite and let me know pretty please!

Monday Moods-It’s December!

I know there is always that someone who says, ‘I can’t believe it’s December!’ and I must admit, I am that someone- I swear it was just July! Although I am not looking forward to the snow, I am pretty excited to dress in sequins and eat lots of holiday goodies. I am also looking forward to the new year, as it always feels nice to have a fresh start. For this week, I have pulled some of my favorite December things to get you into the holiday spirit and hopefully start your week with some sparkle!

And if you’re curious as to what this auction is all about…

Including a beautiful hand selected collection of furnishings and decorative objects, the auction features “items donated from the personal collections of local and international design starts and personalities, as well as limited editions items from world-renowned interior design brands….with all proceeds from the sale going towards supporting DX’s eduction programs, curatorial initiatives and the permanent collection.”

As for the Design Exchange itself is…well…it’s a pretty fantasitcal place here in Toronto…”Established in 1994, Design Exchange (a registered charitable, not-for-profit cultural institution,) is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of design excellence and preservation of design heritage.  From furniture and architecture to graphics and fashion, DX exhibitions and talks are curated to reflect contemporary culture, while demonstrating the relevance and importance of design to everyday life.”

So with all that said, here are is a little close-up of my selections…

One – This Bleeker Table from Avenue Road is as graphic as it is functional.  I love the contrast of the hard material and rounded delicate shape. It’s edgy but still timeless.

Two – I don’t think I really need to give much explanation as to why I love the Dorwin Chair by Bernhardt…just look at it…all that brass and creamy leather had me at hello a looooong time ago. It’s a sexy beast of a chair.

Three- I’m a firm believer that every living space needs at least one vintage chair and when it’s a black leather, sculptural beauty like this one by Katavolos for Laverne, it just makes all kinds of sense.

Four – Two words on this one…Kelly. Wearstler…that’s really all I need to say there. Everything she makes/produces is at the very top of my wish list. This trapezoid piece is all kinds black and white graphic yumminess.

Five – The Saarinen tulip table is a vintage classic…it works with every decor and instantly makes any room a little more special. It’s timeless, versatile and effortlessly chic.

Six – Oh my lawd…the Mesa Dinette table is just soooo darn pretty.  I love the balance/tension created between the its glamorous regency feel and modern sculptural design.

Seven- I love objects that are slightly weird and this Fast Vase by Cedric Ragot is exactly that…it’s graphic and punchy but also whimsical and playful…a good mix to be sure.  Throw one of these bad boys on your fireplace mantle or coffee table and I promise your space will look instantly more artful.

Eight – I have this slightly weird obsession with pretty plates and these pastel landscape designs just make my heart go all pitter patter like. Their slightly ‘Canadiana’ish too, which just makes me love them that much more.

smile chair by andreu world

Nine – Modern black dining chairs are my jam and jelly and these ones by Andreu World are pretty perfect. I can see a set of them placed in an old Parisian apartment with buckets of plaster mouldings and a huge crystal chandy above…a perfect mix.

trace lamp by mercury bureau

Ten – The Trace Lamp by Mercury Bureau is an exercise in modern minimalism…it’s bold but restrained and unfussy…simple and clean but still graphic and interesting. Like the chairs above, I’d love to see one of these juxtaposed with an ornate ceiling medallion above.

Though these ten pieces are my favourites, there are so many more beautiful selections being auctioned off as part of this amazing event.  And because I know you’d love to see this stunning collection for yourself and maybe even have the chance to bid on a thing or two, I’m hosting a giveaway for tickets to the evening taking place on May 10th from 7-10pm.  Oh and PS, these peeps will be there too…Arren Williamns, Raymond Girard, Tommy Smythe, Brandon Tiraro, James Davie, Karen von Hahn, Rick Mugford, Troy Seidman, Derreck Martin, Natalie Mitrovich, Kate Thronley-Hall so yah…it’s your definite chance to see/buy some beautiful things and hob-nob with the who’s-who of design/design media:)
