Monday Moods – 1st Edition

Now that #pineavehouse is finally shaping up, I am looking forward to getting back to the blogs and as such, I wanted to introduce my new series, #MondayMoods.  In this series I give a little taste taster of what has been inspiring me lately from shoes I’ve been lusting after, songs I have had on repeat, or swoon-worthy photographs that I can’t get enough of. Since we are about to get another major heat wave, I felt a beachy palette of powder pink and glass greens would set the perfect tone for the rest of the week.

Art Fair Fridays – Kelly O’Connor

Friday has once again come around and both Bijou & Boheme and Heirloom & Knot are thrilled to share with you our latest instalment in our ongoing Art Fair Fridays series where we bring you weekly design inspiration and exclusive interviews with the talented artists that inspire our creativity on a daily basis.

This week we had the pleasure of interviewing Kelly O’Connor, whose playful collages give a nod to days gone by, with a definite Old Hollywood vibe. She playfully mixes elements that weave together images and concepts to create works that feel imaginative, eccentric and almost fairytale like; an escape from the everyday.

How long would you say you have been a professional artist?

Since 2007, this is when I first started creating bodies of work to show in a public setting.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about your art ?

From a professor in college, the most important thing is you make work.  You can figure out the concept later on.

How would you describe your creative process?

I typically start by gathering images I’m attracted to, on such online shops like ebay.  I gather materials from used LP record shops.  Many of the paper materials are harvested from record covers.  I find more of an array of colors to work from when using the record covers.  Many of them were printed with unique processes that no longer exist, plus you can not recreate their patina.

What is your favourite medium to work in?

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

Just recently my work was acquired by the McNay art museum, they have included it in a show with one of the original collages by picasso!

Where do you find your greatest creative inspiration?

My childhood and images from the 50’s & 60s- Which are not the same, I grew up in the 80s/90s.

What do you think sets your work apart from other artists?

My process is something I developed on my own, I was not taught how to construct my collages.  Many times I use a method of inlaying the pieces of card stock.  The collage fits together like a puzzle.

It’s not secret that I’m a sucker for whimsy…and femininity…and irreverance. Kelly O’Connors skillfully takes all of these elements and wraps them up in one giant ball or quicky pretty, and I love it.

Her works feel over the top but still restrained and cerebral. It’s a wonderful balance and I find myself always very pulled into the story that each piece is telling.

Aside from the wonderful piece on this week’s board, here are my favourite works from Kelly’s current portfolio…

Wednesday Whoa and a Giveaway – DX Design Auction

I’m so happy to be showcasing my picks from from the first ever Design Exchange Auction that’s coming up on May 29th, in support of Toronto’s Design Exchange.

design exchange items curated by christine dovey

1|| Bleeker Street Table by Avenue Road 2|| Dorwin Chair by Bernhardt 3|| Katavolos T-Chair For Laverne by Caviar 20 4|| Mini Trapezoid Sculpture by Kelly Wearstler 5|| Vintage Saarinen Table by Knoll 6|| Mesa Dinette Table by 45 Kilo 7|| Fast Vase by Cedric Ragot for Rosenthal US 8|| Landscape Tableware Set by The Drake General Store 9|| Smile Chair by Andreu World 10|| Trace Lamp by Mercury Bureau

And if you’re curious as to what this auction is all about…

Including a beautiful hand selected collection of furnishings and decorative objects, the auction features “items donated from the personal collections of local and international design starts and personalities, as well as limited editions items from world-renowned interior design brands….with all proceeds from the sale going towards supporting DX’s eduction programs, curatorial initiatives and the permanent collection.”

As for the Design Exchange itself is…well…it’s a pretty fantasitcal place here in Toronto…”Established in 1994, Design Exchange (a registered charitable, not-for-profit cultural institution,) is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of design excellence and preservation of design heritage.  From furniture and architecture to graphics and fashion, DX exhibitions and talks are curated to reflect contemporary culture, while demonstrating the relevance and importance of design to everyday life.”

So with all that said, here are is a little close-up of my selections…

One – This Bleeker Table from Avenue Road is as graphic as it is functional.  I love the contrast of the hard material and rounded delicate shape. It’s edgy but still timeless.

Two – I don’t think I really need to give much explanation as to why I love the Dorwin Chair by Bernhardt…just look at it…all that brass and creamy leather had me at hello a looooong time ago. It’s a sexy beast of a chair.

Three- I’m a firm believer that every living space needs at least one vintage chair and when it’s a black leather, sculptural beauty like this one by Katavolos for Laverne, it just makes all kinds of sense.

Four – Two words on this one…Kelly. Wearstler…that’s really all I need to say there. Everything she makes/produces is at the very top of my wish list. This trapezoid piece is all kinds black and white graphic yumminess.

Five – The Saarinen tulip table is a vintage classic…it works with every decor and instantly makes any room a little more special. It’s timeless, versatile and effortlessly chic.

Six – Oh my lawd…the Mesa Dinette table is just soooo darn pretty.  I love the balance/tension created between the its glamorous regency feel and modern sculptural design.

Seven- I love objects that are slightly weird and this Fast Vase by Cedric Ragot is exactly that…it’s graphic and punchy but also whimsical and playful…a good mix to be sure.  Throw one of these bad boys on your fireplace mantle or coffee table and I promise your space will look instantly more artful.

Eight – I have this slightly weird obsession with pretty plates and these pastel landscape designs just make my heart go all pitter patter like. Their slightly ‘Canadiana’ish too, which just makes me love them that much more.

smile chair by andreu world

Nine – Modern black dining chairs are my jam and jelly and these ones by Andreu World are pretty perfect. I can see a set of them placed in an old Parisian apartment with buckets of plaster mouldings and a huge crystal chandy above…a perfect mix.

trace lamp by mercury bureau

Ten – The Trace Lamp by Mercury Bureau is an exercise in modern minimalism…it’s bold but restrained and unfussy…simple and clean but still graphic and interesting. Like the chairs above, I’d love to see one of these juxtaposed with an ornate ceiling medallion above.

Though these ten pieces are my favourites, there are so many more beautiful selections being auctioned off as part of this amazing event.  And because I know you’d love to see this stunning collection for yourself and maybe even have the chance to bid on a thing or two, I’m hosting a giveaway for tickets to the evening taking place on May 10th from 7-10pm.  Oh and PS, these peeps will be there too…Arren Williamns, Raymond Girard, Tommy Smythe, Brandon Tiraro, James Davie, Karen von Hahn, Rick Mugford, Troy Seidman, Derreck Martin, Natalie Mitrovich, Kate Thronley-Hall so yah…it’s your definite chance to see/buy some beautiful things and hob-nob with the who’s-who of design/design media:)
