One Room Challenge – Week 6

And just like that, it’s week 6 of the stressful/exciting/invigorating game we all know as…

banner chrisitine dovey one room challenge art maude arsenault

Note that my title says week 6…not reveal…

If you’ve been following my play during this round and through weeks one, two, threefour and five you know that I’ve been tackling a room in a house renovation my family is completing.  And as you arrive today, I have to very sadly formally admit defeat and throw up a bit of a white towel. Finishing this one by today, was just not in the cards my friends and as positive and silvery liney as I try to be about the whole thing, it still feels like failure is getting me a bit in the downy dumps truth be told.

And as I type this post, what’s getting me even more blech like, is that I really don’t have a whole heck of a lot to show you because we’re still waiting for the damn roof membrane to go up and until that happens, the room is pretty much at a total standstill.  It’s honestly so incredibly frustrating. It’s been raining off and on around here so the roofer’s schedule keeps getting pushed but honestly, it just seems way to hard to nail down a timeframe. And when you’re working on a deadline such as this one, the frustration caused by this sort of thing is just amplified a hundred fold.

So, I wait…and continue to try to see the big picture and remember that doing this whole house correctly and in the right order is more important than a blog reveal.  And…while doing that/trying to stay positive /in the right head space, I play around with my collection of pretty stuff that will one day go in this room and take photos of it all to show you just because.  So for today, here’s that…a random little collage of snaps that will hopefully remind you (and me truth be told) of my space…and what is coming…not today…but a little down the line…

Notes on this business:

1. The photos of me at the house are by the incredible Kayla Rocca…I’ll be doing an entire feature of her next Tuesday so stay tuned for that.

2. I exchanged my West Elm bedding for the light grey and also picked up one of their pink/lilac silk pillows…the colour is a perfect compliment to my Tonic Living drapes, which…

3. I hung up…yup…I couldn’t wait to see them up so I hung those pink linen lovelies in my living room and I’m obsessed with them.

4. My Karastan carpet arrived this week. Truth be told, it arrived directly from Karastan weeks ago but I took it to my friends at Alexanian to have bound and they did a fabulous job. It’s now happily residing in my master bedroom…so soft and cosy underfoot and of course, I lurv the spots.

5. There are still a few things to be decided for the actual design of the room. For one, I’m debating on adding some sort of settee to the end of the bed…I really want the room centred on the fireplace so I’ve been hunting.  Next, the bedside table decision has been made and I’m going for some version of the Lawson ones I showed last week…they’re hopefully under construction as we speak.  And finally, my drapes…I’m hoping to use a rounded rod and might even double it up with a little something, something…I’ll save that for next week’s post just in case you know…the room still looks the same (insert some sort of fire/devil face emoji here lol).

And with that, I’ll sign off this week and tell you to sign off from here and go as fast as you can to these wonderful places…

…to see what you’ve actually been waiting for…REVEALS!!! I for one, can’t wait to soak up all their magical makeover goodness.

As always, a HUGE thank you to Linda for putting this all together. It really is such an amazing ride and even though this one has definitely put a few years on me lol, it’s one I feel very lucky to have been a part of.

One Room Challenge – Week Five

Welcome to week 5 of my…

banner chrisitine dovey one room challenge art maude arsenault

…which will henceforth be known as the week where I admit defeat and have to very begrudgingly tell you all that my master bedroom in not going to be done by the deadline.

Insert SO MANY TEARS.

If you’ve been following my challenge along during weeks one, two, three and four you know that I’ve been tackling a room in a house renovation my family is completing. When I signed up to take part in this round months ago, I honestly thought everything would be much farther along but because of circumstances much beyond my control, such is not the case.

Last week, I was very hopeful that if we stuck to the schedule we were all working from, things would come together.

And then I got a call from my contractor (who PS, is just so amazing…I know he’s lost sleep trying to make this happen for me and I feel SO lucky to have him as my partner in this…seriously THE BEST.) last Friday that basically said this…because our steel roof is a month out (you can only order once the trusses and sheeting are up,) to make the house water-tight, we need to install some sort of membrane and said membrane, because of scheduling, can’t go up until the week of Nov 12th. As well, our windows have been delayed until Dec. 3rd. Those two points alone mean that we can’t move forward with any other step. I can’t have Super Allen put up my Metrie moulding if the drywall might get wet…I can’t put in my beautiful Alexanian hardwood floors if the humidity can’t be regulated…my beautiful Drop it Modern wallpaper…obviously the same thing…a Crystorama chandelier…bedding…my Karastan leopard carpet…you get the idea. Nothing more can happen without a dry roof.

So, I’m devastated. Honestly. So incredibly bummed. I’m not the kind of person who misses deadlines or admits defeat easily so this has been a really hard pill for me to swallow.

But, at the end of the day, it’s construction and reality is that this is exactly how that usually goes. Delays happen and like dominos, if one thing is out of line, the rest sort of comes tumbling down.

The silver lining side of things is that though I’m not going to finish by Nov. 11th, I’m going to continue posting every Wednesday until this sucker is done, which means, more than 6 posts on the project…I’m predicting upwards of 10 by the time we’re done.  Even before the window comes, I’ll definitely be able to start getting some of the pretty stuff moving so by next week, I very much hope to be able to show you walls with moulding and maybe even my fireplace installed. I hope.

For now, here’s where things are.

First, construction…not much has really changed in terms of looks since last week…the sheeting has gone up and the room has been cleared out…

The super annoying piece to this puzzle is that this week, we’ve had the nicest November weather in history. It’s going to be 20 degrees celcius today…that’s practically summer.  I’ve been staring at this room and wondering if we shouldn’t just throw caution to the wind and get moulding up but…inspections are still happening and if we had to remove drywall for any reason, that would be the worst so…the holding pattern continues.

And while not much changes over there for now, I’ve decided to take control of what I can and set up some of the pretty stuff in my existing house just to see how things are coming together.

First, my Arianna Belle Kubus pillow got an insert and looks sort of awesome everywhere I put her…

one room challenge christine dovey arianna belle pierre frey kubus

Especially when in combo with my Park Blvd. lambswool pillow, that arrived via a very sweet hand delivery from the owner this week…

one room challenge christine dovey arianna belle pierre frey kubus park blvc pillows fur

one room challenge christine dovey arianna belle pierre frey kubus park blvc pillows fur

And speaking of Park Blvd, all 3 of my pillows from there are all kinds of heavenly…the texture is sublime and I’m honestly sort of obsessed with them…

christine dovey one room challenge park blvd pillows

The attention to detail on the trim and fabrication is just SO good.

And on the pillow front as a whole, with all 6 of my pillows now here, I had to play around with them in my existing master just to see them all happily hanging out together…

IMG_5994

And then, I had to also add my West Elm linen bedding and Drop it Modern wedding blanket to the mix party…

And as you can spy in some shots, my Bellacor Arteriors Harvest lamps got propped in too…

one room challenge christine dovey bellacor lamp

one room challenge christine dovey bellacor lamp

My lamps actually arrived a few weeks but because they are hand finished, weren’t a perfect match. Thanks to amazing customer service from Bellacor, I got a third delivered and was able to find a pair that are almost identical.

Very grateful to have them and see how pretty they look beside my bed…in love with their large scale and modern, graphic take on a traditional lamp shape.

As far as the other elements in the room and things that are under my control lol, I still have bedside tables to check off the list. I only have about 2′ on either side of the bed to play with so they can’t be large but my lamps are big, big, big so the scale will be tricky.

As of now, I’m looking at these options:

1. Something built in to the paneling that will be going on either side of the bed…sort of like this…

b3df1a0d2d97b1866f3aa036be8b77a5

2. These vintage marble beauties from one of my favourite local stores, Patina

marble nightstands patina one room challenge christine dovey

…these would be a slam dunk if it weren’t for the fact that they’re 20″ wide so it will be tight for sure…also, they’re a little above my budget…but god I love them.

3. I might have Super Allen make up a pair of black powder coated frames with some grey antique mirror in them…sort of along the lines of the console I did for my piano room one room challenge

citizen-atelier-piano-room-console-designed-and-styled-by-christine-dovey-and-photographed-by-ashley-capp-615x922

4. These Crate and Barrel aged brass and black goodies are pretty great…they’re the right size and the pricepoint is good…

crate and bareel pascal side table

…but as with option three, I’m a little worried they won’t look heavy enough to carry the large lamps.

5. My original design board included something custom in the style of these Lawson Fenning stacked nightstands…

lawson fenning stacked nightstand

…and truth be told, this is still probably my favourite of the bunch and now that I have more time to play with, they could work.

Votes?

Also on my to-do list is to make a final decision on the bedding. I know…you’re thinking…she already has that.  You’re right…I splurged a few weeks back and bought a set of linen bedding and do really love it. After making everything up though, I’m wondering if I should have opted for the lighter grey duvet cover…the charcoal is looking quite dark in my black room…having said that, the new room is going to be navy and grey so perhaps it wouldn’t read so black on black etc.

Here’s a shot of the light grey shown in the #mywestelm listing (photo from @lloydmariano)…

And here’s the slate in my space…

one room challenge decoratorsbest pillow arianna belle pillow park blvd pillow west elm bedding

Platinum or charcoal? What say you?

I’m leaning lighter grey.

And while I mull on that and continue to cry in my cheerios a bit about not getting to show you the room itself with all this pretty stuff in it, have a visit to all my fellow ORC’ers…

One Room Challenge Fall 2015 Participants

…who I’m quite sure are MUCH farther along than me and able to show you peeks at fabulous reveals that are (aside from mine lol,) coming up next week! I for one am super excited to see all of that goodness.

One Room Challenge – Week Four

Hi and welcome to week 4 of my kick at the…

one room challenge christine dovey maude arsenault photograph

…can.

PS…so far said can has not been hit.  I’ve been swinging a lot but no direct contact has been made lol.

If you’ve been following my ORC game through weeks one, two and three, you know I probably bit off a little more than I can chew by deciding to make over a room in my #projectflip renovation that didn’t even really exist at the start of the 6 week challenge.

You’ve probably also come to the conclusion that making this decision renders me a tad nuts but to be fair, when I signed up for this challenge round a few months back, I really did believe construction would be farther along.  If things like permit delays and asbestos hadn’t gotten in the way, I’d sooooo be in a better spot.

As it stands though, I’ve been dealt a bit of a shizzly hand and started a few Wednesdays back with nothing more than some framed walls and a sheeted floor.

And after 3 tumultuous roller coaster weeks, here is where I now stand.

My incredible contractor (my favourite person on earth right now) installed a fake roof so that we could move forward on getting the room’s electrical and HVAC done…it also meant that drywall could go up this week…

Now because it’s October in Canada, a tarp was laid on top of the temporary roof so that we could keep the bedroom looking like this….

christine dovey one room challenge construction

…rather than like this…

christine dovey one room challenge construction

…on the ensuite side of things. Oy.

The drywall/rain/temporary roof situation was pretty aces in terms of letting us move things along but of course, not a permanent solution so when the most beautiful trusses of all time finally showed up this past Friday…

christine dovey one room challenge construction

…there was much rejoicing.

And then, as if the heavens actually opened up as if to reveal a giant warm hug, a real roof magically started to appear…

christine dovey one room challenge construction

christine dovey one room challenge construction

christine dovey one room challenge construction

christine dovey one room challenge construction

christine dovey one room challenge construction

christine dovey one room challenge construction

Which after two days of massive effort from the construction crew, brought us to last night at around 8pm and a completely trussed and sheeted roof.

All good news.

Except a giant monsoon like storm is scheduled for today (Wednesday if you’re reading later in the week) and plywood planks won’t keep that business out of dodge so once again, tarps are going up and nailed down.

So…hopefully as you read this, the tarps are holding strong and water is being kept out of my nicely drywalled room because you know…floors, moulding, wallpaper and the like is all supposed to start happening like yesterday…no biggie.

Deep breaths.

Of course, aside from construction adrenaline party, this week had other perks.

To start, Nuart Framing did a killer job on my Maude Aresenualt piece from the Print Atelier and alongside my Maja Cunningham car photo from Minted , it’s a nice little his and hers moment…

christine dovey one room challenge maude arsenault and minted photographs

Also, Hollie Cooper (my dear friend and the bestest pillow maker around) dropped off my Kelly Weartler Mineral Velvet/Robert Allen black leather pillows…

christine dovey one room challenge decoratorsbest pillows kelly wearstler velvet leather trim hollie cooper interiors

…and I’m obsessed with them…a huge thank you to DecoratorsBest on the fabric/trim front.

And while still on the topic of textiles, my Arianna Belle Pierre Frey Kubus lumbar pillow also arrived…and well, it’s delicious…

one room challenge christine dovey pierre frey kubus pillow arianna belle

Next up on the good textile news front…I made a little visit to Tonic Living headquarters to pick up my pink linen drapes.

1. The curtains are all kinds of awesome…

2. So is the store…

christine dovey one room challenge tonic living

And finally, on the gianormous plus side of ORC life, Trumeau Stones installed my hearth…

…and sent me these progress pics of my fireplace nirvana…

And that alone, easily makes up for the stress of everything else.

So. In. Love.

PSA…if you’re in the market for a custom fireplace surround and live anywhere remotely close to Toronto, Trumeau Stones my friends…Trumeau Stones.

So…to summerize this week:

1. Construction continued to be a roller coaster ride of joy/terror.

2. My contractor continued to shock and amaze by pulling out every possible stop to try and make this happen for me…as of Tuesday at 8pm, he was texting me from a window store trying to find something temporary to put up so that we could seal the room and really push forward on interior stuff.  I call that DEDICATION.

3. More pretty arrived from fabulous ORC sponsors and I feel super duper grateful.

4. I still have a crapload to get done…and it’s more than just a little overwhelming…once again, the ORC has made me exceedingly happy wine exists.

Here’s the schedule of what still has to happen before reveal…if the construction photos weren’t clue enough lol…

Wednesday- inspections and install of a temporary window until the real one is delivered early December

Thursday- more inspections and installation of temperature control measures so that we can lay our wood floor; ceiling drywall

Friday- wood floor goes in…as does the fireplace; more inspections and hopefully the all clear to soldier on

Saturday- Monday- wall moulding install a la #superallen

Tuesday- painting

Wednesday-Thursday- wallpaper install

Friday- lighting and drapery install and the furniture moving from my house 3 doors down to this one

Saturday- more furniture install and styling

Sunday- photo shoot

Are you laughing yet? I am…it’s all I can do so as to not completely loose my mind. 10 days my friends…10 days. Glug, Glug, Glug.

Oh and my husband just left on a 9 day business trip…cue whatever song screams woe is me please.

Here’s hoping this talented lot is fairing slightly better…

One Room Challenge Fall 2015 Participants

…with all kinds of pretty non-construction photos to share with you this week:)
Oh…speaking of pictures..check back later if you feel up to it…because work finished after dark last night, I wasn’t able to take some snaps of the sheeted roof in place…I’ll do that after I drop the kidlets off at school and upload them to this post…I might even get super fancy and do a little Periscope action…we shall see.

One Room Challenge – Week Two

Hi and welcome back to week 2 of the One Room Challenge.

one room challenge christine dovey maude arsenault photograph

If you read my week one post, you know that there’s a real and true chance I might not finish this thing.  As of today, reveal is in exactly 4 weeks, and in that time, I still have basically an entire room to build. Thankfully, I’ve got an aces team and this post is dedicated to my lovey dovey mushy feels for the contractor/trade/sponsor peeps who are all working their behinds off to give me a room worth presenting come Nov. 11th.

Yup…I heart them all greatly and after this week’s events, it’s pretty hard to figure out who my heart really belongs to. On the one hand, I have major affection for this round’s amazing ORC sponsors…and then there’s my incredibly supercalafragistically awesome builder.

Let’s start with the sponsors.

Because my room is still very much not really a room, I’m very grateful that my orders for the room have already started to pour in so that I have something to actually show you this week.

Here’s what’s turned up or been decided on so far…

1. Flooring

I had a visit to Alexanian this week to arrange for delivery of my white oak floors

one room challenge christine dovey master makeover alexanian hardwood floor

…and while there, also un-rolled/viewed my fanstatical leopard carpet that arrived directly from Karastan for the first time….

Sooooooo in love with both! And also very grateful that Alexanian has an amazing carpet repair/binding/serging service. I’m doing a light serge edge on this spotty goodness and having it custom cut to fit my space perfectly- happy days.

2. Artwork

If you’ve followed the ORC before, you’ll know that Minted is a sponsor with the mostest. For this round, I selected all this black and white yumminess…

In addition to all of these, I’m also waiting for this heaven to be delivered from one of my new favourite art sites, The Print Atelier

that morning by maude arsenault christine dovey one room challenge

Maude Arsenault in a genius…I want her entire portfolio.

3. Paint, Wallpaper and Walls…

Thanks to good folks at Para Paints, a Purlator delivery dude showed up with 3 gallons of good times in paint form…

…which equated to two cans of ‘Friday Night Lights’ in a semi-gloss finish for the millwork, trim and doors, and one can of flat ‘Chrysler Hall White’ for the ceiling.

As I showed last week in my inspiration plans, I’m hoping to create wainscotting around the perimeter of the room with vertical panels on either side of the fireplace and bed.  To do this, I’ll be using the scene three fashion forward collection from Metrie

…and as part of that, will be installing these beautiful doors at the entrance to the room and between the bedroom and bath…

I can’t wait for all of this to happen…can’t wait.

Oh and Ps on that front…Metrie is hosting a contest right now to give away $2000 worth of moulding!!!! Check that out here.

5. Textiles Pillows and Drapery

I ordered up some Kravet leather cording

Oh an re: the pillows, I can’t wait to see these Scottish wale

7. Fireplace!!!!!!!!

I feel extremely lucky to have met and now partnered with an amazing artisan and craftsman, Mark, the owner of Trumeau Stones.  This incredible talent constructs custom molds and hand casts the most divine stone fireplaces that are truly, the stuff interior design dreams are made of.

Our new little house is going to be the lucky owner of two of his works. The one you see above is actually the piece going in the living room. I cheated and am showing it here first, because it’s the one that’s already in production. My ORC bedroom one is actually going to get this handsome little devil…

…all in blackened honed limestone.

I freaking can’t wait.

Also, sidenote…Mark’s farm showroom in Port Dover, Ontario is quite easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been and makes me want to move to the country yesterday…

10. Furniture and Lighting

After going back and forth on what to put at the bottom of my bed, I discovered yesterday that Lazzaro Leather has introduced a new line at High Point which includes THIS….

Screen Shot 2015-10-13 at 4.51.33 PM

Hello ‘I’ll take two please’. You know I love my ruched leather and this is all kind of happiness. Love, love.

And speaking of affections, thanks to Bellacor, my bedside tables are going to each get an Arteriors Wheaton lamp in gunmetal

bellacor wheaton lamp christine dovey one room challenge

I’ve long admired this traditional lamp with a bit of edge so thrilled that I get to use them in this space.

And as a counterpoint to the sort of graphically hard lamps, I’ll be hanging this ornate beauty from Crystorama

crystormama chandelier christine dovey one room challenge

It’s just super duper girly and pretty, which makes me super duper happy:)

So as you can see from this long list of material utopia, I have reason to be pretty partial to the sponsor suitor in this little love triangle.

But then again, there’s still my contractor RMS, so I suppose we should full circle back to the tale of why my he’s also the bees knees.

That one started earlier this week when, upon realizing our trusses were likely not going to be delivered on time and knowing that such an announcement would quite literally throw yours truly over the proverbial cliff, sweet sweet contractor sent me this, which he titled ‘the contractor series’…

one room challenge christine dovey master makeover rmsgta

…and then within moments, he also sent me a text that outlined how he was going to take it upon himself to construct a temporary roof deck so that regardless of truss delivery, I’d be able to start work on my room and actually have a hope of finishing on time.

Yup…instead of just letting me shrivel up in a ball of defeat, sweet ‘going the extra mile of 50,’ organized a temporary roof build just in time for me to snap these pictures last night and then get this post up and live.

So thanks to him and this super awesome roofer dude…

one room challenge christine dovey construction

…by the time this post goes live, there will be a completed roof…

…which means that we can use this week to run HVAC, electrical and even start on the drywall.

And all this means that by next week, I very hopefully might be even able to show you a room that looks like…well…a room.

Happy, happy days.

And speaking of ending on a positive, make sure you link over to all my fellow ORCers…

A little bio from the incredibly talented shop owner Jen…

Keaton & Co. is a Toronto-based online boutique featuring high quality modern monogrammed goods. The company was founded in 2012 by Jennifer Martinez, who developed a passion for luxury fashion and home decor after working in the magazine industry. On a quest to find stylish and unique wedding gifts for her friends, Jennifer discovered her love for creating personalized goods. Each item at Keaton and Co. is lovingly designed and stitched at her studio in Toronto.”
