I’m Thankful For…New and Old Stuff in my House

It was Thanksgiving here in Canada this past weekend…and I had a good one.
Mostly it was super because I spent it with family…duh, they’re what I’m most thankful for.
But, this year was also extra beuno because lots of prettiness came together here at the abode.
So if you asked me what I’m thankful for this year, here’s the proverbial list…
1. I’m thankful for pretty china that was passed down to me, gold flatware I scored on eBay for a song a few years back, orchids of any and all varieties, and the set of crystal glasses my sweet Nana gifted to us for our wedding…

2. I’m thankful for this vintage table I found at Patina…local goodies that don’t require me to incur crappy duty/shipping costs make me happy…
3. This set of black patent leather chairs that I got for such a fabo deal as part of Black Rooster’s flash sale…
4. Nicole over at Sketch 42 for helping me discover the joy that is the black sharpie…

5. New furniture arrangements that make you fall in love with old stuff again…
6. An extraordinary carpenter…
…who can look at a picture I show him for inspiration and create this piece of furniture nirvana…

…from scratch…in 4 days.
MIND BLOWN
So yes, Thanksgiving 2013 was a good one…feeling very lucky/grateful these days.

Wish List Wednesday (on Thursday Again) – Changes Around My House

This day off thing is getting to be a bit of a problem…need to get my act together;)
In any case, I missed this yesterday…
Blog Series- Wish List Wednesday
…so here she goes.
If you read this seemingly controversial article (PS, I’ll never understand why/how people can get their shorts so in a knot about such things…you’ll know what I’m talking about if you read the HUGE debate that ensued in the comment section- some people need to drink more wine I think:) about masculine and feminine decorating on Apartment Therapy
His and Hers:
…you might have noticed that my living room (as shot by Donna Griffith for Style at Home) was the first image in their bank of ‘feminine’ looks…
520d6b1f697ab03ec3000a8d._w.540_s.fit_
…and I can definitely see why it was used to provide girly styling examples.
Thing is, as of late, I’ve really been wanting to tone down all the pretty as it were…I’ve been craving some hard ugly to balance it all out.
And to that end, I’ve been making some small changes here and there.
First, I switched out the brass ceiling fixture, which I LOVE so much more in its new home in the basement…
…for my long beloved Mouille (in knock off form…mama has kids to feed;)…
I’ve also been moving pillows around and swapped out all the pink for these tiger beauties from 219
And on the settee, I removed the chevron like ones (now in the master) and put my single tuxedo lover…
Aside from that, I’ve also been de-accessorizing…I’m wanting to have pieces really shine in a sculptural way so I guess I’m sort of playing with a concept I never thought I would…’less is more’ as it were…
Stay tuned for a bigger room re-arrange that will see some pieces go and maybe, just maybe some new pieces come in…but in a ‘less stuff’ way;)
I’d LOVE to start with these goodies…
I mean have you EVER???
I NEED this…like reeeeeeeaaaaaalllll bad.
Also, these…
I’ve been wanting a pair of Alkies for EVAH!!!
And these…sweet jesus…
…lighting orgasm right there.
PS…all of these goodies are from an ah-maaazing Chicago store my ah-maaazing #projectvicarious client sent my way…I was literally up pouring over their site at 3am (email me for the source link if you’re interested…I’m not quite ready to give it away yet- not until I maybe purchase those things above;)
Also on the list, an ugly cocktail table of some variety…having a hard time with that one.
I like these JA numbers (PS, I find he’s KILLING it lately- want alot of things on that site)…

…but none are quite right.
I also found this guy on 1st Dibs…
Maitland Smith Tessellated Stone Coffee Table With Brass Inlay
…and am mulling on that.
In the little things department, and again on the JA front, I love these stuffed dudes…
Also, I did this light from BR
So yeah…I need to win the lottery- clearly.

Collaborating – EQ3 and Polyvore

If you read my BlogPodium re-cap yesterday, you probably noted that one of my big takeaways from the day was the importance of collaboration…both with fellow bloggers and with businesses.
To the later’s end, I’m so happy to showcase two little partnerships I’ve been working on as of late.
First, I was thrilled when the folks over at EQ3 emailed me to let me know I had been chosen as their blogger of the month:)))
As part of the selection, I got to select something from their store so that I could style it in my own home.
One glace at their Design House Stockholm Light
…and I knew she was the chosen one.
Because the light is so infinitely versatile, I found choosing just one place to showcase her a little tricky so instead, I decided to take Ms Stockholm on a small journey around my living room…
You can read all about this beauty’s adventures in casa Bijou over at Inhabit, the EQ3 blog.
Along with this fun little project, I’m also very excited to be working with Polyvore on their newest venture.
I’m sure you all know and love this site for fashion boards but what I’m most excited about is that Polyvore now has a ‘Home’ section, which means putting together design and/or inspiration boards is a total dreamboat of a situation.
As with fashion and beauty, creating gorgeous interior/home sets is so so easy.
I’ve been having a lot of fun playing around over there these past few days and have put together two boards that do a good job of speaking to what I like…
First there’s this guy…(PS, sorry about the weird gap at the top…one of the images is larger than it appears and the crop can’t be changed…things like that drive me nuts when I post them but I feel better about it with a little disclaimer)

Personal Style

And then this one…
Wild Rose

PS…something quite exciting will be coming and it has to do with what I’ve put together…stay tuned on that front.

For now, I’d  hop on over and try out Polyvore’s Home fun for yourself…be warned though…it can end up being a giant time suck…I’m a little addicted to it already and am finding it hard to pull myself away.

And with that, and in keeping with the whole collaboration bent of this post, I’m off to hatch and plot a little more re: #projectdreamhouse with my architect extraordinaire Wallace.

::Whispers::

Can you say ‘joint blogging the entire project’???

Coming soon my friends.

Weekend and Randomness

So it was a long weekend here…but not for me…hubs is away AGAIN on business and poor guy had to go here…
The teenager is also really hard done by and has found herself here…
And me…I’m home…going no where fast.
Arg.
Thankfully, we did enjoy a lovely 2 days in gorgeous weather before everyone left.
As per the regular ‘spring time with kids family schedule’ we went to a local farm for some fun…the kids climbed on hay bales, went down tube slides, ran through corn mazes and rode horses…

It was fun…always is.
On Sunday, I took the kids on an early morning walk…in our jammies…which they loved…it somehow magically transformed an ordinary jaunt into an adventure in their cute little heads…
…as stop at Starbucks was of course necessary to give me a reason to be up and about with 3 kids at 7am;)

The fam jam and I also did some work around the house….our beautiful tree in the front has been blooming its ass off…
…and I managed to cut some branches for the indoors…
…prettiness.
And as for yesterday, I said bye to the man and large kid (insert sad/more than slightly jealous face) and went for another walk with the kids…
…and then joined our fabulous neighbours (@designinghollie) for a BBQ at their house….they were kind enough to take pity on me for being on my own and let me crash their family fun time…love them.
What else…
…on another ‘not so happy/jealous of my travelling family’ note, Jasper seemed to spend the weekend deciding that sleeping most of the day is sooooo April 2013…aka…he appears to be over that fun…thankfully, when he wakes up looking like this…
…it’s hard to be too upset;)
On the other hand, I’ve been trying for days to get these shelves sorted {note that our white quartz is now on:}…
…and still don’t know if I want to keep them or not.
I also didn’t have time to paint the bathroom sconces {I’ve decided I’d like them mat black to tie in the shower door}…

So….cuteness aside, a little more napping would be swell…especially since I’m in single mom mode…I’ve got a seemingly never-ending list of shizzle I’d like to get done while there are a few less peeps in the house so please send over some ‘baby…you know you want to have some long long naps’ good thoughts my way:)
And while you are at it, please also pray that the N’espresso gods get my order here soon…it was supposed to arrive Saturday but there was a hiccup and I’m still coffee-less…I’m started to feel more than a little desperate for some Arpeggio action.

Up in the Hood

I’ve been rattling on about my stove hood for over a year now…basically ever since #projectkitchengorgeous was complete…there was just something about the stainless steal option that didn’t jive with me…I wasn’t in love with how the marble backsplash was wider than the hood…or how the top floating shelves had nothing to ground them or run into.
So…I started looking at other options.
There were thoughts of brass…
…but my space already has quite a big of gold goodness going on and I didn’t want to overdo it.
So…I moved to white and went through some traditional triangular like options…
…but they didn’t seem to quite fit either…too expected maybe for my slightly off kilter kitchen.
I also briefly considered a super modern option after seeing these spaces…
via

…but without the glossy cabinets to go such a hood, it too was a no go.

So…I kept thinking and decided on something uber simple to offset the frivolity of the rest of the space, gathered inspiration…

via

...and had my contractor extraordinaire make it happen.

The Instagrammed before…

…and the after…

…minus the pretty pink flowers;)

The hood still needs a coat of paint and some calking but you get the idea.

I’m THRILLED with how it looks…love how the top shelf now buts into something and adore how the hood now stretches across the entire width of the marble.

I think this shape adds a nice hit of modernity and echoes the shape of the waterfall island really well.

So yes…pleased as punch.

Stuff is Happening, Melbourne, Newborn Photo and a Winner

I had good news and blech news yesterday on the homefront.
First the good.
#projectkitchengorgeous is getting one last tinker…the stainless hood is officially coming down today…
{that’s my contractor extraordinaire who does all the moulding work and pretty much anything else you could possible dream up}
…and being replaced with a very simple box that will be the width of the marble backsplash and will continue right up to the ceiling.
Something like this…
…with ever so slightly rounded edges.
EXCITED
PS…these photos are from at the same home in Melbourne…along with the kitchen, the bathroom kills me softly…
…I mean I pretty much want to copy the whole damn thing.
Moving on…and sadly, to the bad news…
I had a roof installer over yesterday to discuss our options…turns out my roof has so many pitches that installing the metal roof I want will be tricky to say the least…and on top of that, it would involve having to remove our siding.
Now…let me just say that I REALLY want to do this anyway- has been in the plan books forever…BUT…if we remove the siding, the windows have to be done at the same time (again, have had plans to do this forever since they’re all rotten upstairs)…the issue is that the roof has to be done now…it’s basically falling off…but…do I/we really want to spend so much money all at once?  The answer to that would be a big fat no…but…it really all needs to be done.
Or…we could just throw in the towel and move.
Or…we could forget the metal roof and just do shingles and then replace the windows next year.
The last option is obviously the easiest and best on budget but damn nation…it’s the one I LEAST want to pick…you see my dilemma…words of wisdom/advice?
In other {albeit unrelated} news…I had a little newborn photoshoot with my very favourite photographer, Jodi Renee.
I’m going to post a little preview of the session next week, but for now, here’s one of my very faves…
I’m so smitten with how Jodi magicallly captures the emotion behind a moment…such a treasure she is.
And in keeping with things that make me happy {aka…thowing money at the pit that is home ownership}…it’s time to announce the lucky ducky winner of the
Miranda Frye giveaway.
Congrats to…
Angela M…you’ve won your choice of necklace or earrings from the stunning…
Woot.
