Camera Ready Interiors

I’m so happy to be joining with 23 other talented designers to feature the work of the photographers who make our work and portfolios shine. Dreamt up and organized by the fabulous Jana Bek, this co-blogging feature called #camerareadyinteriors, will help shine a much deserved light on the artist’s who make us look good.

Photographing interiors is a very specialized craft…I’ve watched many a shoot take place and let me tell you, it is HARD work. Capturing a space in its very best light takes so much skill…walls have to line up…light has to be just right…glass on art has to be made non-reflective…accessories have to be positioned and re-positioned so many times…mirrors have to be dealt with…perspectives have to be adjusted…I could go on and on but sufficed to say, those who can make a room look it’s best on film are truly amazing to watch.

And then there are the lifestyle photographers…those who have to also deal with people in the shots…interiors + capturing a person(s) at their best = a real task…especially when you throw say kids or people who hate (i.e. me) having their photo taken.

Over the course of 10 years, 3 babies, 2 houses and a ton of spaces, I’ve had the great pleasure of working with 4 photographers who I feel so very lucky to have been partnered with…all have such a unique eye and have captured my work and life in a way that makes everything feel just that much sweeter.

First up, the photographer who has  photographed pretty much every local interior I’ve ever done. Ashley Capp is the best of the best when it comes to interiors and has honed her craft in a way that makes her work truly stand out from the crowd. She has an attention to detail that means every shot is studied and practised until it captures the absolute best nuances of a space…she is an absolute perfectionist and I adore that about her. Her portfolio features a stunning array of food and interior shots and I feel so very lucky to have had her shine a light on my work. Ashley’s eye for what makes each space or design truly beautiful, is un-rivalled…she always makes a room’s true spirit shine through, in a way that feels elegant and refined…she truly has a gift for taking a space and making it look infinitely prettier than it would have without her. And on top of her very obvious talent, Ashley is one of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet and our days spent on location together are among my very favourite…

Next up, the photographer I’ve probably known the longest out of the bunch….Jodi Renee. We met 10 years ago during a shoot for a local kids’ store. My Scarlett, then a baby, was asked to take part in the ads and Jodi was the photographer in charge of capturing the kiddos. The pictures she took of my little one completely blew me away…though I already of course thought my baby was the most perfect one in the universe (as all mamas do:) she somehow managed to make me see my Scarlett differently…almost like she was able to capture the twinkle in her eye…her sweet old soul starting right back at me in every picture. I was immediately smitten to say the least and have since, had the great privilege of having Jodi capture other spaces and moments in my life…and with every one, she showcases how perfectly sweet her eye is for life and time. Jodi has an amazing way of making time freeze and stand still in every shot…in a way that feels free-spirited and infinitely wise. I am and will always be, a huge huge fan…

The next photographer on my list is the incredibly talented Kayla Rocca. As Toronto Life’s official photographer for TIFF, Kayla has an obvious gift for capturing people in their very best light. But it’s not just that she’s able to document life and places in a pretty way…Kayla’s lens captures design, people and lifestyles in a way that feels magical…and when I say magical, I truly mean outer-worldy/stars in the sky/next level/unicorns dancing/rainbow skies magical.  She has a gift for seeing her subject’s best quality or feature and exploiting it to its absolute best potential. Kayla took photos of me for my portfolio last year and I so clearly remember how I felt when I first looked at them. Usually I’d be picking apart every line or wrinkle but with these, it was like all of that didn’t matter. Instead, I was actually able to see the version of me that probably other people do…the one that isn’t self-conscious about her age, or the way her smile turns up, or how her hair is looking on a particular day. Kayla is that photographer…the one that makes the little things we don’t like disappear…the one that makes the imperfections speak to what’s truly beautiful about what she’s capturing. She and her work are magic…

And last but certainly not least, I need to shine light on a photographer I’ve only just recently had the pleasure of getting to know…the amazing Kieran Darcy. A few months ago I got an email from this gem of a talent, asking if I’d be interested in having my family shot in our new home and I of course, practically lept at the offer. After she came and spent the morning with us, I was so excited to see each capture, knowing that the photos she sent would be something I would treasure forever and let me tell you, my expectations were quite simply blown out of the water. Kieran has an incredible way of seeing life in its perfect imperfection…she captures moments as they happen, not staged versions of them. She sees the absolute beauty in funny faces…and kids who won’t stand up straight..and half-eaten apples on the floor…and un-made beds…and wrinkles…and dirty knees. Kieran manages to find the beauty in life’s everyday and capture it, in a way that feels as if she’s actually freezing your memories. Her work feels nostalgic and meaningful and romantic…full of heart and soul and all that’s really important. The photos she took of my family in our new home are truly a gift and speak to the journey we took to get here and the true loveliness that exists in the little moments in between the big ones…the ones that actually matter the most.

Again, I feel so truly lucky to have worked with each of these woman and to have some of the most special rooms, moments and milestones captured by them. Words can’t really adequately reflect my gratitude to each of them but I hope, along with the other designers taking part in this series, that I’ve been able to shine some light on their incredible talents. Make sure you check out each of their portfolios and instagram accounts to see more of their magic.

Blogger Ladies Whose Work is Rocking My Casbah This Week #3…and My Cards

There’s some work floating around the webs that just HAS to be shared.

1. I’ll start things off on a personal note….my graphic designer/brand maker extraordinaire Erika Brechtel proved her genius, thanks to delivery of these babies…

Needless to say, I’m pseudo obsessed and am going to be slutting them around to whoever will take one:)

 Erika Brechtel Brand Stylist = amazing.  Czar Press Print Shop= amazing.

(Also, a huge thanks to Citizen Atelier for the referral to the print shop!)

2. Numero uno leads me to dos…

When I opened up my box of cards, there was one of someone else’s included…the printer wanted to show me an edge option so sent it along…imagine my great happiness when I looked at the beautiful card belonging to J. Marx Atelier and then linked over to her stunning portfolio to find a whole lot of this kind of thing…

3. Did you see Alex’s feature in Style Me Pretty Living? Hellloooo bold fabulousity…

That office makes me want a small room with wall to wall bookcases and paneling everywhere in a large and in charge way.

4. And finally, I know you all were blown out of the water and all the way to Egypt with the reveal of Fieldstone Hill’s nursery…I mean stop it with this layered, eclectic prettiness…

5. And finally, full circle and back to moi with this post. I rocked my own world by FINALLY making some progress on my master bedroom.

I’ve literally never shown pictures of this part of my house before becuase honestly, our bedroom has always been a total and complete tip…my good friend Hollie can attest to this…she’s seen the horror in person.

Anyhoo…a few things have got my ass in gear on this front, which I’ll tell you more about later…but for now, here’s a sneaky peeky of what I’ve accomplished in the past little bit, in the form of de-cluttering, painting, art situating and bed fluffing…

There’s lots more to get done but it’s a start;))))

And that my friends, is some good blogging business for this week.

Happy almost weekend…I’m off to the Christie Antique Show tomorrow and literally can. not. wait.  Be sure to follow along my Insta feed for the many many ‘god I want to buy this’ moments.

Blogger Ladies Whose Work is Rocking My Casbah This Week

As per Monday’s post, I’ve been soaking up much blog friend amazingness as of late.  Some standouts for me:

1. Amber just revealed this bathroom and I’m DEAD over it…

amberinteriors1

I’ve literally NEVER seen a wallpaper that I love more than that floral by Ellie Cashman

elliecashman

…and along with the marble and brass (which is PS, a Restoration Hardware vanity that Amber had plated- sooooo brilliant,) well let’s just say I very much wish that little jewel-box of a bathroom was mine.

When the #projectdreamhouse happens, this paper will go somewhere.  For suresies.

2. I’ve been following along with the renovation of Angela’s home over at the Painted House/via her Instagram feed and holy moly, she’s literally created my dream house in a nutshell…every single detail is perfection…

Lord knows I LOVE a girl who embraces black, gold and architectural splendor…oh and busts…adore my fellow cement people lovers.

4.  Some #getpublished magic over the past few weeks with:

a) Alex and Liz’s office in the Glitter Guide

b) Erika’s feature on The Everygirl…

Seeing that last image just made the mental image of Erika working away to create my new site, totally come to life…so so grateful to her and ridiculously inspired by her Everygirl interview.

PS on that front, I was thinking that I might do a little behind the scenes of how my website came to be in terms of development and design…of interest?

5. If I had thought of this post/potential series earlier in the week, my dear friend Nicole would have been noted here for her amazing new photographic genius on UPLO (PS, if you haven’t spent hours diving through all the incredible work on this site, do so now…I time sucked a good 5 hours last night) but since I just came up with it, she’s getting two mentions this week and deservedly so…in addition to the goodness I posted on Monday, check out her Lego Slim Aaron brilliance that I just realized was hers, thank to Erin’s post from yesterday…

lego1

lego2

So delightful…how much do I want one of these to be the centerpiece for my little dude’s room in the new house? That would be very much.

All in all, these ladies have given us a major case of inspiration overload no?!?!  And how about a giant high five to these talented woman for making shit go and happen in such a ridiculously fabulous way.

I’m actually thinking now that I’ve typed out the title of this post,  I’m going to turn this into a series…I need a good image board- stay tuned.

If You Want It, Black Rooster It #6…and an AMAZING Abode

Wednesday means…
…and today, I’ve found a space that has me dreaming of so many things for #projectdreamhouse.
Get a load of this living room…
The floor makes me absolutely crazy…it’s random pattern and slightly worn feel…glorious.
And of course, the slick black modern furniture, mixed with traditional architecture is soooooo up my alley these days.
I’m sure you like it too so here’s the attainable, Black Rooster version…
Good stuff no?  And speaking of, here’s the rest of that home (belongs to a dude named Eric Yerno and appeared in the March issue of Spanish AD) for you viewing pleasure…

It’s all just almost too much…the glassed in kitchen…that black mirror in the bedroom…the marble fireplaces…the architecture…the mix of artifacts and traditional/modern furniture…love, love, love.

Thinking About 7- #4

Hi.
I’ve got lots on the go, which translates to lots on the brain.
So, it’s sharing time.
1. I was at a fabulous little Kravet/Jonathan Adler colour seminar yesterday so had time to peek around the showroom…in between the 3 or so plates of food I was shoving in my face that is.
Anyhoo…I zoned in on the Kelly Wearstler section because let’s face it…the woman is my total and complete idol girl crush and everything, and I mean everything, she does is like magic sauce.
I found this…
…which is sooooooo going to happen re: the little secret collaboration of sorts that I’m been hinting at…which PS, will be revealed on Monday…along with some other big news…
This leads me to numero deux
2. MONDAY WILL BE A BIG DAY HERE ON B&B
Make sure you pop over for the ‘secret talks’ announcement, along with some goodness thanks to my favourite magazine Style at Home.
I’m pretty sure both little tid-bits will ensure that I follow along with this sage advice…

…well hopefully anyways;)
3. #projectbaby is still in the active rumination phase, though I think I might have a firm plan.
I have to admit though, I’ve received a number of submissions for
Baby, Baby, Baby Nursery and every time I see one, I want to completely scratch what I am thinking and just follow along with said plan…you bloggers are some talented folk.
I’ve got another ridiculously fab one to share tomorrow, thanks to the ridiculously fab MFAMB, so make sure you drop over for that and leave some much deserved love for Jenny.
And speaking of said series, I’ve decided to store all of the nursery boards in one place as they are posted, so that you, my dear readers can view them all at once…there’s a new button on my right sidebar that will bring you to a page with all of the nurseries on display, along with links to their respective posts…look for this familiar button..

4. The whole #projectbaby thing, along with the recent completion/reveal of #projectscarlett has made me feel a little sorry for my
‘Malcolm in the soon to be middle’ as it were.
I put together his room on a strict budget and though I really do love it’s sort of rustic/naval library feel, it needs a little something to jazz it up a bit…especially since the plan I have for #projectbaby is sort of a little ballzy.
PS on the #projecbaby front…I’m still on this sort of train…
Back to Mac….since his trim is all painted in a deep navy, I’m thinking a little
Paul Loebach Yee-Haw action (in white and cream) would add the perfect layered surprise…

It’s sort of subtle but would add a good dose of whimsy etc.
I’d also LOVE to add these prints I’ve been wanting for like ever…

And PS, I’d also like to win the lottery so I can afford to do all of the above.
5. Said cash windfall leads me to my next thought.
I’ve been discussing finishing off an office for my husband, since his new job allows for the flexibility of working at home.
I made a pitch for some really dramatic dark wallpaper yesterday, layered with some giant boat pictures framed in acrylic…like this guy (hubby is a sailor- loves boats)…
{viaoriginally seen here}
….and this chair (hubby loves mid-century anything)…

RARE Iconic George Mulhauser Lounge Chair WHITE leather Mr.Chair For Plycraft Mid Century Modern Resurrection Eames

…to which he replied, “actually, I was thinking of painting the walls white, re-using the old chair of my mothers and sticking up the boat pictures we already have.”

…And deflation insued.

6. These shots all have me wanting to do something…

gorgeous/ burgundy velvet settee/ portrait
{via}

Wine coloured velvet, berry on the floor, pink on the walls, portrait…HELL YES!

design and style from a scandinavian perspective. those walls!
{via}

…more proof that I need to find a wall to paint/wallpaper in a painting.

Pretty in pink
{via}

I’m going to get my hair did on Saturday…excited to try out Colour Lab in the city to get the ‘Fashion Week’ done…which will hopefully translate into something along these lines because afterall, what 30something year old with a giant baby belly doesn’t need bright pink hair?

windows and patio
{via}

I want that addition with the floor to ceiling black metal windows/doors stuck on to the back of my house…it would make me happy.

interior design by colleen carney. floral, lilac, orange. hazelton house fabric
{via}

After yesterday’s post and the moodboard for my client’s foyer project, I really can’t get the whole cantaloupe/lilac out of my mind…this bedroom sealed the deal- have to make that happen.

Also, that Hazelton House fabric…it’s Anne Dorothea and I have some in the black colourway- it’s on the back of my chairs in the hallway.  That headboard though…wowzers…would ADORE to copy that shit- too bad I have no room to put it in nor the 5K or so it would take to make it happen…that fabric is crazy money but god it’s pretty.

Speaking of good florals, this one is also a winner…

graphic wallpaper in neutral, floral bedspread
{via}

…again with the cantaloupe…loving.

7.  Since we’re talking about things I’m thinking about…

Yeah, I can't wait until it's done pouring either
{via}

…I’m almost 6 months preggers and besides dreaming of sweet baby, my brain is happily counting down until the day when I can have some sort of sweet libation…mommy is missing her wine!

And just before I go, I’d love to direct you over to a little guest post I did for the insanely talented Erika at Small Shop…as I mentioned yesterday, I’m sort of re-discovering the beauty that is burgundy (or wine, or berry or whatever you want to call it;) so I put together this little board…
Bijou and Boheme for small shop

…along with some pretty pictures that showcase one of my favourite ways to mix this trending colour…you can see the rest of my post HERE.

Peace out blog readers.

Still on a Random Streak…Lucky 7

Well…it’s Monday.
Whoppie pie.
I had a busy weekend driving all over hell’s half acre trying to find my up-cycle item…success finally but it was a loooooong search.
For today, some recent eye catchers…
1. I’ve never seen this part of the famous ‘wood island, black/gold hood, giant skylight kitchen’ but wowzers…not really in love with the black shelving but OBSESSED with the antique looking cabinetry below.
two tone kitchen cabinetry

2. I spied this picture over at Things that Sparkle and well, it’s just so damn pretty…thinking of updating one of my pages with it…

femininity
{via}

On the flip side of this shot, but equally as fabulous, is this one…

.
{via}

…it’s already become my new ‘advertising’ shot…love.

3. Thanks to Eleni, I now know that the wallpaper I was lusting over is ‘Flora’ by Cole & Son…it’s actually the wallpaper version of this iconic Gucci scarf.  After a mad google search trying to find out if and where it  could be bought, I ended up writing to the company to see if it was going to be put into production…sadly, it’s been archived…apparently it’s available for bespoke ordering and I’ve requested pricing but chances are it will be WAY out of this girl’s budget…sad face…

4.  Numero three leads me to the way I’m feeling lately…

story of my life...
{via}

…so many projects I’m dreaming of finishing but SO little cash to do them with:(
Please send ‘ her husband must get the job this week’ good thoughts my way.

5.  Speaking of projects…I’m going to make some sort of hanging rack happen in Scarlett’s new room…

{via}
.
..only hers will be suspended with gold chain and will of course, involve a brass rod.
The hanging bed idea has gone out the window…have other plans.

6. This bedroom has me dreaming in mint…

Minty colored bedroom

7. This whole room makes me breathless…

So quirky and charming- love that floral sofa
{via}

…the kelly green bamboo chairs with leopard seats…dead…that settee…dead and in heaven- I feel like I’m alsways asking this but anyone know what that fabric gloriousness is?

Enjoy the day love futters…I’m off to buy school backpacks for my soon to be Kindergartener and almost grade oner…and yes, both of these happenings mean that yours truly is going to soon find herself at home…ALONE!  Please pray to the gods that my husband is out of here (as in gets a job…notice that I’ve brought this up twice today- biiiiiiiig interview this week so let’s just say it’s on the brain)…mama needs some quiet time:)
