Project Brownstone: Full Reveal!

I’m so happy to be able to share with you today, one of my most favourite reveals of all time…#projectbrownstone.

This one started a few years back, when my client first approached me about helping with her brand new old brownstone. At the start of the project, her and her husband had just bought and begun renovation on a stunning row house and were looking for someone to consult with on design/architectural questions and then later on, to help with decorating/furnishing/space planning etc.

Just to give you an idea of where this home started, this is a shot of the before…

project brownstone christine dovey

…clearly a space with amazing bones but in need of a little love.

With a canvas like that, I really couldn’t wait to get started and together with an amazing client, we began the process of bringing this beauty back to life.

Along the way Natalie Kraiem, a NYC designer, was also brought on board to assist with local sourcing and oversight.  It was great collaborating with another designer and in the end, I think the space evolved into something that really represents the client and both of our viewpoints.

And when all was complete, I was so lucky to be able to fly down to NY and put finishing touches on the space and get it totally camera ready for its close up in Style at Home Magazine. Shot by my friend and amazing talent, Nicole Cohen, the feature tells the whole story of this beautiful home and how it all came together…

I’m so honoured that Style at Home wanted to publish this beautiful home and am truly so proud of how everyone involved with the project, worked together to create something special…

Progress in Project Greenbay, Some New Design Boards, TV and a Series

Good morning friends.

First up, I want to thank everyone for all your words of encouragement re: the One Room Challenge…I’m very happy to report that I was able to find someone very last minute (thanks to my awesome architect Wallace,) and he’s here today working on the tile…though it’s still very un-likely that I’ll be able to finish by Tuesday, I feel so good knowing that at least some progress is being made.

Next, I wanted to share some #projectgreenbay progress, thanks to the very fabulous ladies over at the Find. If you live in Chicago, you’re probably well versed in the amazingness that is this store. If not, let me just say that from my one there, I’m already slightly very obsessed. They have an incredible selection of vintage accessories that have been re-imagined with lucite bases, along with some insanely beautiful sculptural pieces, furniture selections and lighting…

It turns out the that Find also has some pretty damn talented stylists because after selecting a bevie of goodies for #projectgreenbay, they delivered and helped style the crap out of some of our bookcases and shelves.

Behold…

4. The office…and note our newly installed balloon…thanks Hollie Cooper!

I’ll be going to Chicago early December to put some finishing touches on all of the above and can’t wait to get my hands on some more of this amazingness.

Coming along with me, will be a pile of goodies I selected from Elte so stay tuned on that front.

And as for #projectgreenbay today, I also wanted to show you this sneak peek of our master bedroom curtains, featuring drapery by Hollie Cooper and hardware from Lux Holdups

Pretty, pretty.

Moving on to some other stuff…as you know, I’ve also been working on some other design projects, including #projectbraecrest…I sent off the design boards, which looked like this…

lores dining room and hall concept one lores kitchen console area concept one

project braecrest mood board living room christine dovey

We’ve made a few adjustments but this is definitely the gist of what you’ll be seeing.

Next up, I just completed the design for a small powder room, called #projectmildred. We considered a few concepts, before landing on these…

project mildred bathroom concepts christine dovey

…that then these got narrowed to this…

project mildred bathroom christine dovey

Next up, I’ve been doing some quick consulting for a client in Washington DC, who is just looking for some fabric, art and coffee table selections…she wanted feminine modern that would work well with her more traditional pieces…so I sent her this…

ammai board

…we made one small adjustment and are going to go with this Chiang-Mai fabric in the smoke colourway…

chiang mai smoke

PS…I had no idea it even came in this colour and holy balls…I LOVE it…I was sort of over this fabric as a whole but am now way back into it, thanks to the black and white.

And finally, on the project front, I sent off this board for a new client who is looking to create a really layered boho/natural vibe in her home…we’re starting off with her foyer and I’m hoping a lot of this will happen…

michael wou citizen atelier

I really want to layer her foyer walls with lots of neutral art, with every natural themes etc…with a few more graphic pieces tied in for balance.

After doing the board, I realized that I’m also definitely going to have to incorporate some of Michael Wou’s beautiful photography…

michael wou citizen atelier

Really perfect for there I think.

And you’ll note I used the same black and white photograph in the last two boards…I just found it on Natural Curiosities and am sooooooo in love. Want it for myself.

This is turning into a really long post so I better wrap it up…just a quick note that if you missed my appearance on Steven and Chris yesterday, and are in Canada, you can watch it here

steven and chris christine dovey art steven and chris christine dovey

In the episode, I talked about my favourite places to buy art online, and gave peeks of my #oneroomchallenge piano room, a client’s foyer and my basement bathroom.

If you’re in the US, you can find the episode on the Livewell Network website…just search for the title.

My next in segment will air Nov. 25th so I hope you’ll tune into that as well:)

And finally, I’m really happy to have been asked to take part in Celine’s ‘Pretty in Pink’ series in honour of breast cancer awareness month…I shared my piano room, because well…it’s my fave pink room to date…

christine dovey pink piano room 1

…2 other bloggers will be sharing their stuff as well today so make sure you check it out.

And with that…I’ll sign off, with thanks again for being awesomely sweet/supportive readers. Your comments and kind words truly mean so so much to me always.

New Work, a Small Bathroom Remodel, Wallpaper and a Video

I’ve got some newbie projects starting and I’m pretty excited that quite a few of them are local ones.

In person business gives me the opportunity to really get my hands in there…touch stuff…style stuff etc.

One of my newest clients is someone I met while visiting one of my fave shops, Black Rooster Decor...we were discussing mirrors and our conversation moved to the one she had seen of mine in the Style at Home reveal of my basement.  That convo quickly moved to whether I offered design services, which led to emails, which led to me getting to work on her insanely gorgeous home.

Behold the ‘befores…

projectlores great room before shots christine dovey style

projectlores hallway before shots christine dovey style

And by before, I obviously mean one already very STUNNING home.

An architect and designer were brought it to bring the house to where it is now and what I’ll be doing is furniture, art, window treatments, rug and lighting selections, along with a healthy dose of styling.

Fun, fun, fun.

To get things rolling, I sent these vintage Pace blue leather dining chairs over as a rather heavenly option…

pace dining chairs christine dovey style vern and vera

Crossing fingers on that one.

Stay tuned for more on developments on this fun, which will henceforth be known as #projectbraecrest.

As for new stuff, I also spent some time this weekend doing some quick wallpaper/lighting/mirror/flooring concepts for a powder room consult…the directive I was given was bold, bold and bolder so with that in mind, I sent these 4 scenarios over…

powder bath design concepts christine dovey style

(Art from Eleanors, Lumas and Citizen Atelier, floor from The Cement Tile Shop, Wallpaper from Flat Vernacular, Mirrors from Black Rooster and lighting from a combo of 219 and BR)

I’m not sure which one selection I’m hoping for most but super excited to see some of that happen.

And speaking things I want to exist, while searching for the above situations, I found some wallpaper that I’m considering for quite a few things, not the least of which is #projectdreamhouse…Cole and Son never gets it wrong…

wallpaper options from cole and son christine dovey style

…the combo of the black wisteria top left and the modern black/white geometric top middle is making my brain hurt from the combo possibility fantasies.  Same with the black and white weird floral and that geometric.  Or the bottom row far right two…they play well in the schoolyard too.

And on the topic of playing well together, but on a totally different note, I’ll leave you with the most recent holiday music video from my 4 smallish humans.

Happy Thanksgiving Canadian friends.

Update- Project Greenbay

It’s been a little bit since I updated the goings on at #projectgreenbay so I thought I’d share some progress as it were.

Since my last post on the subject, my clients actually moved into the home and as such, we’re slowly going through and figuring out which pieces of furniture will stay and which will go…this is really phase 4 of the work we’ve done to date.  The first was paint and wallpaper, then lighting, then fabrics/drapery selection and now we’re on to the actual furnishings.  Though it might sound a little out of order, I did have design plans for each space in mind right from the start and though many have evolved as we’ve gone along, that’s just the way I like it.  Design to me is such an organic (for lack of a better term) process…you formulate ideas and plans and then revisions happen, surprise purchases are made and somehow in an almost magical ‘poof’ sort of way, it all seems to come together…that’s how it works for me anyhow.

When I really site down and think about ‘my process’ it’s very often a piece of vintage furniture or lighting that keeps me up at night searching and searching and when found, totally solidifies a plan.  Such is the case in the little girls’ room for #projectgreenbay thanks to this vintage teal velvet fabulousity…

project greenbay girls room colour board

That thing is like unicorns dancing on rainbows made of candy.

In similar fashion, this Tonic Living striped fabric solved our drapes in the powder room dilemma…

project greenbay kids powder

Now in some cases, it’s your client who might see something that changes their idea about where they want a room to go.  You may recall that originally, our plan for the family room at #projectgreenbay looked something like this…

project greenbay family room old plan 1

…dark and moody.

But then we collectively decided that we wanted the room lighter and brighter so we toyed with the idea of pink…

project greenbay family room old plan 3

…and then moved somewhere in between to a pale grey…

project greenbay family room old plan 2

But then….my client went through my portfolio and decided what she really wanted was a version of my living room in white…which led me to the idea of ripple fold sheers covering one whole wall (where’s there’s a rather awkward basement like window that does nobody any good)…and great art that I myself have been lusting over forever…and then this plan was born…

project greenbay family room new plan

So as you can see, things definitely change and move and get revised…and in the end what you hopefully end up with, is a home both your client and you adore.

And on that note…here are some shots of where some of the spaces in the dream house that is #projectgreenbay….

1. The eldest daughter’s room has just had some pretty magical drapes installed…

2. The formal powder is coming along with mirror and sconces up and up…

3. The son’s bedroom also got some drapery love with these crazy fantastica roman blinds going up…

project greenbay son bedroom september

And within a few days, drapery will be added to at least 4 other rooms, thanks to the amazing Hollie Cooper…I seriously don’t know where I’d be without this gem of a friend and business team-mate…she does the drapery for all of my clients and let me just tell you, she’s totally and completely amaze.  If you need further proof, get a load of these…

hollie cooper pillows chrisitine dovey style

I sent off a request last week for a graffiti/doodle/KW like pattern for some pillows for greenbay and for my own house and this is what got whipped up in the matter of days…DYING over them. I want them sort of everywhere. Another client of mine and I are already dreaming up ways to use those zippers on a settee or dining bench…with beaucoup doodles…sooooooo good.

Anyhoo…I guess the point of this meandering post is that design is such a process…it ebs and flows and takes a village as it were…I would be nowhere fast without my Hollie….my Super Allen…my wjb designs…my Peter the painter….my powerpoint;))))

And you know what, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Boarding and Black Rooster’ing

I’ve been busy working away on some brand spanking new client projects.

First up, there’s an office re-design we’ll call #projectfield.

The befores…

And the plan…

christine dovey style #projectfield design board 2

…which centers on my client’s wish for femininity…and her love for the Flat Vernacular wallpaper I  used in the ensuite at #projectgreenbay.

I’ll admit that this board was actually my second go at it.  When I first saw the room, I wanted to go bold and glammy…mostly because of that insanely perfect desk…this was concept #1…

christine dovey style #projectfield design board 1

..but it wasn’t quite what my client was after so back to the drawing board it was an concept 2 was born.

My client has already purchased that amazing vintage commode…

…and the wallpaper is going up tout suite.

The after shots will be coming pronto on this one:)

Moving on…I also just finished a  quick consult on a nursery in California…we’ll call this #project13th…

The befores on this blank slate…

My inspo…

And then the plan options…

Client is going with option A, which will include wall to wall Stark Antelope…that Black Rooster daybed everyone knows and loves, the Anthro fabo wallpaper on one wall, that incredible bear photograph from Citizen Atelier and some bold black and white stripe curtains…will be beuno when it’s done.

Next up, there’s a living room zhush I’ve been working on, with the royal name #projectwestminster…which is PS, also in California! My mainstay clientell has mostly been Toronto, Chicago and NYC up to this point so excited to be seeing some west coast action as well:)

Anyhoo…the not so before befores on this place…

And with a mandate to add in tons of femininity and lots of brass and blush, this is what I came up with on that front…

#projectwestminster concept board christine dovey style

I’m soooooo in love with the combo of these Black Rooster console tables, the mannequin artwork and the West Elm lamps…

art black rooster console west elm art christine dovey style

Like HARD CORE love.

I’m not angry at the vintage chairs either…

gold gilt vintage chairs

Note that black and white stripe resin BR table

bw_striped_close_up_grande black rooster decor

…I own it and admittedly plunk it in many design boards because it’s 100% the most awesomely versatile table ever. If I had to invest in one piece of furniture for any home that I knew would work anywhere and make any space better, that table is is.

And on the topic of BR and this room, can you die happy over a blush Beni? I sure as hell can…

Tasmanian_Rug_Salmon_grande_grande black rooster decor

And finally for this week, work continued on #projectgreenbay with a solid concept for the playroom.

The wallpaper is up and all the built ins are painted…

project greenbay playroom progress shots christine dovey style

…and with a desire to add lots of colour and fun, we’ve decided on this…

project greenbay playroom concept board christine dovey style

…the centerpiece of which is the incredible artwork from Sarah Ashley Longshore and that rug…my golly that rug…it almost makes me weap.

As with the last board, BR is plenty represented with the floor lamp, zebra rug, Love sign, giant cherry (which is PS, really giant at 2′ tall!)….

black rooster decor giant cherry

ceiling light and pink leopard pillows.

And though I love love love the burgundy, pink and teal action, we might swap out a pair of chairs and use these vintage ones of my clients…re-upholstered in this Tilton Fenwick fabulousness…

project greenbay tilton fenwick fabric christine dovey style

Stay tuned…as you know, lots and lots is happening with this project:)

And with that, I think that pretty much sums up what I’ve been up to the last few days.

Lots of fun busy as it were:)

A Paint and Wallpaper Update for Project Wowzers, Which Will Now Be Called Project Greenbay

As you know, I’ve been working on putting design plans together for a 7,000 square foot house just outside of Chicago.

I’m doing this all remotely, though I will be making a few trips down to present fabric plans and help with installs/measuring etc.

This is a HUGE job for me…one that I’m still pinching myself about…partly because my clients are just so incredibly awesome…through countless email exchanges, I’ve developed a real bond with them and want more than anything to help give them the house of their sugar plum dreams.  It’s also most certainly my largest job to date and there’s something about being trusted with an entire house that’s both terrifying and ridiculously exhilarating.

The time frame for this job has sort of been warp speed…we selected paint and wallpaper for every room in a week and though we’ve made some changes here and there, those selections have stuck.

Next up was lighting, I think I sourced over 100 fixtures, including more vintage numbers than you can shake a stick at…and if this latest acquisition is any clue…

foyer chandelier

…I think it’s probably safe to say this project is my dream job.

And now we’re moving to furniture, art and fabric selections.  My clients pulled a ‘sell it all and start over’ move that I did before re-doing my home so we’re starting fresh here…almost everything is going to be new and trust me when I tell you, that means we have a lot of things to source/buy.

So far, I’ve completed design plans for the playroom, family room, office, foyer, kitchen, dining room, living room and son’s bedroom…we have library, 2 girl’s bedroom and master left to go.

I’ll be travelling down there in two weeks to lay out my fabric schemes and to get a real feel for the room sizes and layout…I literally can’t wait.  Up until a few days ago, I had only seen thumbnail images of the progress and after seeing full size shots, well let’s just say, I’m more than a little inspired to get phase 3 rolling.

So with that said, here’s a peek at the progress of Project Wowzers / Project Greenbay with a sidenote on the label…I’m honestly having a hard time keeping track of what I’ve named the places I’m working on so from now, I’m going profesh and just calling them by their location name…so wowzers is now #projectgreenbay.

Anyhoo…here she is…
