When You Discover that a Shed is Your Most Favourite Thing in the Universe

This is ridiculously embarrassing to admit but up until very recently, we’ve been been paying 200ish dollars/month for a POD storage container. We first rented the thing when we began renovating this house and trying to sell our other…we needed it then. Once our house was sold, and we moved into this one, we brought the POD out of storage and parked it in our driveway…and it sat there for a year. At one point, we emptied everything and got ready to finally cart the thing away but then the One Room Challenge rolled around and I decided I needed to renovate the basement. So then, all that we had literally just unpacked, got loaded back into the POD.

I’m sure my neighbours legit hated us. POD’s are not pretty. Not at all.

I’m not sure why a permanent storage solution hadn’t occurred to use earlier but when the lightbulb finally went off, when went an bought ourselves a backyard shed and…we finally got to say goodbye to Mr POD…

At 10×10, the shed comfortably holds all of our extra stuff. The furniture that I like but that doesn’t fit in this house, the extra backyard toys, the boxes we’ll probably never unpack, lawn equipment etc. etc.

We purchased the shed in a raw unfinished form and selected the model we thought best matched our house in terms of shape and roofline etc.

And then went about painting the little pretty to match our house. We went to our local Canadian Tire and picked out the perfect crisp white from their Premier Infinity Exterior line…in a shade called Polar Bear.

And after a two coats, this was our little shed…

We’re still playing with the flower situation to see what colour we prefer…

But regardless, she’s a pretty little shed that fits in so well with our house…and holds EVERYTHING!

After finishing off the shed, we also decided to build a pergola over our dining area. Our contractor Andrew Burke put the baby up in a couple of hours and then painted it in the same Premier Infinity colour…

We couldn’t be happier with how it’s all come together. Having this storage shed to hold all the stuff that doesn’t fit in the house is pure and total Bliss. And the paint has made it all so perfectly blend with the house. Happy days!

Canadian Tire – The Worlds Largest Paint Swatch

Last week, I got a once in a lifetime opportunity…

…along some other super lucky peeps, and the most ridiculously charming Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan….

…..I got whisked away by helicopter…

…on an exclusive ride to witness the World’s Premier Paint Experience. From 1000ft in the air, we were able to see the World’s Largest Paint Swatch, a stunning representation of 185 of the most impactful and vibrant colours from Canadian Tire’s PREMIER paint collection…

From this vantage point, I was able to select the most perfect warm white, (Cirrus Clouds PR16Y14) to use for a DIY project I’ve been dreaming up for my One Room Challenge makeover. I’ll be outlining the full DIY in a post later this month, but for now, here’s a little peak at what that business is about…

Stay tuned on that front and for now, I’ll leave you with this amazing video that captures just a little of the magic of what I got to experience…

The whole chopper/incredible view combo thing, is definitely something I could get used to!

Canadian Tire Full Reveal!

As mentioned in my previous post, I had the pleasure of working with the fantastic team at Canadian Tire to create a tailored elegant holiday space using the CANVAS Home & Dining collection. Though I usually tend to gravitate towards pink, burgundy and metallics for Christmas, I loved coming up with a design using Canadian Tire’s colour of the year, Spiced Plum! This colour is so elegant and luxurious, while also being cozy and inviting. When used with golds and traditional green, it feels almost nostalgic, but also unexpected and modern.

When I started coming up with a design plan for the space, I really honed in on creating something layered, rich and full of detail. I wanted to the design to feel whimsical, ethereal, and artistic…

…which is reflected both in the moodboard above, and the Canadian Tire Spiced Plum Pinterest board the team and I have been busily pinning away to…as you can see from all the clips, the design scheme was largely led by the colour story. It was really exciting for me to create something in a palate I’ve never really used before and I’m now a total plum convert:)

And aside from the colour scheme, what I love how the CANVAS Christmas Collection is how it incorporates piece that range from whimsical and ethereal to elegant and refined. There are items that feel one of a kind, as well as ornament staples like metallic springs and beautifully coloured balls. The CANVAS Christmas Collection makes creating a beautifully styled holiday, a one stop shop affair.

And with that, here’s ‘Spiced Plum Regalia‘ a la Canadian Tire’s CANVAS Christmas Collection and yours truly…

I like holiday decorating that doesn’t feel too contrived and enjoy layering natural elements, along with decor pieces that make the holiday vision feel relaxed and elegant, but still playful and natural. I love a little glamour but not so much that the aesthetic feels forced. And as with all my design work, Christmas needs decor a good hit of whimsy/irreverence…the Canadian Tire CANVAS Christmas Collection makes creating this kind of look easy and so much fun. It’s inspired me in so many ways in terms of how I want to decorate my own home this year. And if you are as well , here are my tips for creating your own ‘Spiced Plum Regalia‘ holiday look at home, using the CANVAS collection…

1. Use springs and artificial flowers with natural bows and pine cones to fill in create
garlands, tabletop and mantle.
2. Mix whimsical forest inspired elements like tree stumps and woodland creatures,
with more refined ornaments, vases and decor.
3. Incorporate shades of spiced plum (ranging from lilac to almost black,) silver and
natural greenery to make an enchanted regalia scene come to life.
4. Make a loose garland out of natural greenery for the center of the dining table.
Fill with faux blooms to co-ordinate with fireplace. Stack dishes casually at one end
of table and use cake plates, silverware and linens to fill in the tablescape. Wood
cutting boards and/or platters can mix with crystal, china and antique brass
candlesticks to make for a relaxed and elegant table.
5. Place clusters of white pillar candles around the foot of staircases and around
fireplace. Use tapered candles in vintage candlesticks on the dining table.
6. Use velvet and satin ribbon in shades of plum and violet, along with sprigs and
foliage to wrap presents papered in brown craft or metallic paper.
And then when you’re done, share your beautiful design on social media using the hashtag #mycanvasstyle!!!
As always, a huge thank you to Canadian Tire for giving me the opportunity to help showcase their beautiful collection.  With 6 colour stories to choose from, there truly is a holiday look to suit every style with the CANVAS Christmas Collection!

My New Deck is Decked with Goodies from Canadian Tire

Since moving in our new house, there’s been one giant thing I’ve missing…being able to sit outside. Our front porch is a year out from completion, by the time we go for permit etc. and in the back, our patio doors were boarded up and sat waiting for a proper deck to take shape.

About a week ago, my builders set forth to get the outside enjoyment ball rolling by putting together the first phase of our long range deck goals…a simple landing like pad directly outside the great room/dining. In terms of design, I wanted something modern where I could create a really intimate little seating area and then load it up with plants and natural goodness. This part of the deck was designed at only 12’x11′ so not huge, but I definitely wanted it to be pretty. My plan started with a wall to give us some privacy…our neighbour to the west is very close to us thanks to our 100 year old house being set almost diagonally on the lot…part of the reason we could only go out 12′ in this section. I also wanted to keep things really simple by avoiding any kind of railing so in front of the doors, we did a built in planter, that extended down the full width stairs. Eventually, we’ll add a platform deck at the bottom of this one and then a pea gravel eating area past that. For now though, this phase one deck was dreamt up and put in motion to give us access to our backyard and somewhere to enjoy outside this summer.

Fast forward to today and my phase one deck is now in place. We stained the wall and planter black and will eventually do the boards in a pale grey…for now, they’re the brown pressure treated and to be honest, I don’t actually hate them.

In terms of what is actually on this little deck of ours, I decided from start that I wanted a big sofa…we’ve never had outdoor loungy stuff so I was super excited about this whole idea. After that, it was all about tons of plants, a rug to anchor the space, lots of pillows and layers of outdoor loveliness.

Thanks to Canadian Tire’s new WOW Guide, I was able to find and create exactly what I was after. To start, I ordered up the Canadian Tire Spartina Outdoor Ruga bunch of Obsidian toss cushions, a pair of Biltmore lanterns and a couple of the Cement Candle Holders.  I was so impressed with how easy it was to purchase all of these beautiful pieces through the WOW Guide app, and loved that I could pick up product directly at my local Canadian Tire store.

After the decor pieces, it was really all about filling up the space with plently of plants…and then voila, our little deck was made.

Here she is…

So excited to enjoy my new space with family and friends!

Because I want all of you to enjoy some outdoor goodness too, I’m super excited to be able to offer up a $200 Canadian Tire gift card to enjoy! To enter, simply leave a comment and I’ll draw for a winner next Friday June 3rd, 2016.
